Inhalt:

This seminar will concentrate on the learner rather than the subject being taught, particularly in the light of the demands that our teaching should be individualised and differentiated and should lead our learners towards autonomy. We will be examining what makes our learners “tick”, why some pupils are thought to be “better at languages” than others – or is this merely a misconception in the first place? And – most important – what consequences this has for our teaching. We will also take a critical look at some of the recent views on learning styles and affective factors.

NB: Many of the texts for this seminar are in German, and so this might make it impossible for some foreign/Erasmus students!!

Inhalt:

Mediating, interpreting and translating are techniques used to make communication possible between people who do not share a common language, and mediation is now regarded as the fifth skill in language teaching classrooms, particularly since the influence of the Common European Framework has made itself felt. The question is whether it should be seen as an adequate replacement for translation or whether the two skills should still be taught side by side. Has mediation meant a lowering of standards, to quote one source: das grosse, sinngemäße Wischi-Waschi. Hauptsache, der Schüler hat die Kernaussage erfasst passt schon? This seminar will explore linguistic, psycholinguistic and didactic sources to attempt to answer these questions and look at ways in which both mediation and translation can be taught effectively in the FL classroom.

NB: A good knowledge of German is clearly necessary for practical work in this seminar, and so this might make it impossible for some foreign/Erasmus students to attend!!
