Inhalt
The third annual Summer School will once again partner students of heritage conservation at Bamberg University with colleagues from the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies at the University of Edinburgh. This year our destination is the Orkney Islands, an archipelago located in the North Sea at the far northern tip of Scotland. Inhabited for at least 8500 years, the Orkneys have a rich history that is reflected in their unique architectural, urban and monumental heritage. One focus of attention will be the group of UNESCO World Heritage sites known as the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney": a series of monumental grave mounds, ancient dwellings and ceremonial rings of standing stones that are among the most extensive and best-preserved structures of their kind in the world. Together we will examine how these sites are interpreted, presented and cared for, and will meet with local heritage management professionals to discuss the particular challenges involved. We will also explore the historic town of Kirkwall, Orkney's largest settlement and the centre of its cultural and economic life since the Middle Ages. Through visits to its major monuments, such as the 12th-century Cathedral of St. Magnus, and analysis of its many examples of vernacular architecture from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, we will examine the relationship between built heritage and local Orcadian identity and consider the role of heritage conservation in safeguarding their authenticity. In addition to offering insights into the differing conservation cultures of Germany and Scotland, the Summer School represents an opportunity to strengthen students' English language skills; thus the language of instruction and communication will be English. Active participation in discussions and successful completion of assigned tasks will provide the basis for evaluation. Participants will be asked to contribute 150-200 toward the cost of the trip. Included in this fee will be: return airfare from Nuremberg to Kirkwall 6 nights' accommodation in hostel-style rooms in Kirkwall minibus transportation to and from the sites to be visited entry to the UNESCO World Heritage sites and to the museums and monuments of Kirkwall guided tour of Kirkwall and lectures by local heritage professionals
