- In this talk we will investigate the connection between Friedrich W. J. Schelling's (1775-1854) philosophy of nature and his philosophy of architecture, developed in the Philosophy of Art (1802-1805) from his Nachlass. In examining the relationship between the philosophy of nature and the philosophy of art, I focus on Schelling’s appropriation of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach's (1752-1840) Bildungstrieb (formative drive). The nexus between architecture and sexuality that Schelling establishes leads to interesting insights regarding how sexuality (human and non-human alike) is not only channeled through art but can be suppressed by it. Adding this discussion to Schelling’s psychological, rather than transcendental, arguments regarding artistic creativity in his System of Transcendental Idealism (1800), psychoanalysis comes to mind, particularly the concept of sublimation coined by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). I aim to initiate a dialogue with the Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich’s (1897-1957) sex-economic theories, which regard architecture as an inhibitor of sexuality. I will also consider Reich’s diverging view on sublimation.
