Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar „Introduction to Linguistics“, which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world’s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will look at possibilities for analysing and presenting primary linguistic data, using the material that has been collected during a field-methods course on the language Yom (a Gur language spoken in Benin). Students are expected to work independently but under supervision on projects such as a lexicon, a sketch of the syntax, audio material, and outlines of selected domains of the grammar. The course is particularly suitable for students who attended the field linguistics course in winter term 2011 / 2012; others who may wish to be participate should contact Geoffrey Haig before the semester starts.

Inhalt:

Das Seminar führt in die deutsche Dialektologie ein. Wir behandeln eine Auswahl phonologischer, morphologischer und syntaktischer Merkmale, wie zum Beispiel typische Reduktionsphänomene, Diminutivaffixe und Vergleichskonstruktionen. Die aktive Kenntnis eines Dialekts ist nicht Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am Seminar.

Inhalt:

Pidgins may arise in conditions when speakers of different languages try to make themselves understood, for instance in business matters. These forms of communication developed in large numbers in European colonies, and where English acted as the lexifier language we speak of English-oriented pidgins. If these language forms develop into full-fledged native languages they are then usually called creoles. In this seminar we will first of all look at the geographical distribution of English-oriented pidgins and creoles and their historical background. While we will also discuss the conditions of use of pidgins and creoles, review theories of the genesis of "The Legitimate and Illegitimate Offspring of English" (Salikoko S. Mufwene) and the different stages of 'pidginization' and 'creolization', the focus will be the linguistic features of pidgins and creoles on the levels of vocabulary (including strategies of word-formation, metaphor and paraphrase), phonology, morphology and syntax. Here, these languages differ both from the lexifier language and the native languages of the speakers. We will also take a look at pidgins and creoles as a special case of more general simplification processes that may occur through language contact and second language acquisition, and discuss the (possible) relevance of creole languages to theories of language origins. Practical work with actual language data will be emphasized, and genuine pidgin speakers will also contribute to the class in some of the sessions (Bislama/Beach-la-Mar, Nigerian Pidgin English).
On Wednesday, 16 May, from 18:15-19:45, Dr. Susanne Michaelis from the Max-Planck-Institut Leipzig will give a lecture about her work on the "Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Language Structures" project. This lecture is also part of the seminar.
The Übung which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 12:00-13:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. It is for students of English studies only. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
