This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

In this course, students of linguistics will acquire a basic understanding of so-called “contact languages”, i.e. languages that have evolved as a result of the contact between two or more (usually unrelated) languages with different lexica and grammatical systems. Contact languages, traditionally called “pidgin” or “creole” languages, have been developing over relatively short periods of time and thus represent a “special” type of language, therefore being of particular interest to both theoretical and typologically oriented linguists.
As an example of a contact language, we will study the grammatical system, lexicon, and historical development of Bislama, the so-called nasonel lanwis of the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Bislama emerged among plantation workers in Queensland about 150 years ago and is nowadays spoken by approximately 260,000 cultural Melanesians, almost all of which have one (or more) of close to 100 Oceanic languages of Vanuatu as their first language. Bislama is also spoken by a much smaller number of ex-pat business people, aid workers and researchers with different linguistic backgrounds residing more or less permanently in the country. Its lexicon is to a large extent of English but also French origin, and its grammatical structure resembles to a considerable degree that of the indigenous Oceanic languages. One essential goal of the course is to show how contact languages represent “full-fledged” linguistic systems with their own complexities.

Workshop summary Eastern Anatolia is roughly considered to be the region of Turkey eastward of the town of Sivas, but it also includes neighbouring regions of Syria, Iraq and Iran. The largest languages spoken here include a number of Turkic languages and dialects, Kurmanji Kurdish, Zazaki,several varieties of Neo-Aramaic, several varieties of Arabic, various Armenian dialects (up to 1915), and Laz (Kartvelian) in the Black Sea region. For at least a thousand years, Turkic, Semitic and Iranian languages co-existed in the region, but since the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1928, state policies of Turkification have bleached much of the colour out of the traditional multi-lingual mosaic. Nevertheless, a considerable body of data has been compiled for many of the varieties of the region, and there is considerable scope for further field work, either in situ or with diaspora speakers in Europe and in Turkey’s large cities. This workshop focuses on language contact between the various languages of the region, with a special focus on Kurdish.
Overview of course content We will begin with an overview of the languages, and a guided tour of available sources. We willthen discuss fieldwork methodologies, local specifics that are relevant for field workers, and briefly go into recording and annotation techniques. We will then proceed to a critical assessment of the theory and methodology of contact linguistics, and their application to the Anatolian setting (questionnaires, quantitative approaches etc.). The last three sessions will be taken up with three case-studies from morphosyntax and their regional distribution, based on data that are currently available:
− Post-predicate arguments in OV languages
− The expression of experiencers
− Copular constructions
Participants are invited to contribute from their own work, or to suggest additional topics for consideration; the course can be arranged quite flexibly to accommodate particular interests, as long as these are made known to the instructor at least 6 weeks prior to the workshop. Knowledge of at least one of the major language groups would be an advantage, but is not a prerequisite. Participants who wish to make a presentation at the end of the Summer School will have the opportunity to discuss data and methodology during the workshop, and in the second week. Literature and data-sets will be made available for the workshop by May, and participants are expected to prepare themselves prior to the workshop.

Workshop summary Oceania is the term used to refer to an area reaching approximately from the island of Papua to Hawai'i, New Zealand, and Rapanui, excluding the continent of Australia. The region is home to a vast number of Oceanic and Papuan languages, which together make up more than a sixth of the world's 6000 languages. Linguistic research in this area has a long tradition dating back to descriptive and classificatory work in the mid 19th century. Based on rich text documentations published in addition to grammars and dictionaries, aspects of discourse structure have for some languages been investigated thoroughly since at least the 1970ies. In more recent times, modern language documentation has made available a trove of spoken language corpora of natural discourse, with accompanying metadata and annotation, that opens up unprecedented possibilities for the study of actual language usage, structural variation, and language change. In this workshop, we will investigate morpho- syntactic variation as attested in spoken language corpora. We will focus on the Oceanic language Vera'a, spoken in North Vanuatu, but resources from other languages will also be considered and made available for participants' own research.
Overview of course content We will begin with an overview of the grammatical structures of the languages of Oceania and the data sources used in the course. We will mainly use spoken language corpora from at least the following languages: (details tba). The most detailed set of annotated data available in this course will be the Vera'a corpus which comprises a variety of text types with detailed morpho-syntactic annotation. Recording and annotation techniques will also be discussed. In the second session, we will turn our attention to theoretical and methodological issues in the corpus-based study of morpho-syntactic variation in language usage. The focus in this course will be on particular aspects of discourse structure, namely those that concern the referential properties of arguments in discourse. Other related topics are welcome as well (Please notify the instructor at least 6 weeks prior to the workshop about topics you would like to be included). The last three sessions will be taken up with three case-studies of morpho-syntactic variation in various languages of the region, based on current data and published studies:
− Argument structure and information packaging in discourse
−Aspects of "topichood" across genres
−Patterns of anaphora in narrative texts

This course will focus on language planning and language policy. Students will learn how to approach the complex array of issues implied in language planning. Phenomena:

• such as corpus versus status planning, normativism versus descriptivism, purism, lexical engineering and terminological development, language academies, linguicide
• Minority language rights and language in education. The course will include data and observations from various language contexts with a special focus on languages of the Middle East (e.g. Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish) and regional minority languages (e.g. Catalan, Basque, Frisian).

Students will be introduced to the relevant literature and learn the analytical skills necessary to analyse complex factors behind language planning decisions, and learn to develop a structured research plan.

Inhalt:

This workshop is concerned with different aspects of phonological and phonetic variation in English world-wide. Each session will set out from a general survey of selected accents of English and a discussion of exemplary studies and research papers. The following questions and themes are explored:
1. Variable accent-features: While essentially all sounds can (and do) vary, we will try to identify the most interesting candidates. The focus will mostly be on segments (vowels and consonants), to a lesser extent also on prosodic characteristics.
2. Patterns of variation: We will inspect social factors like age, gender and style, which can help to account for certain patterns of variation that are found within accents. Furthermore, in certain varieties contact and mutual influence between English and native languages or contact between different varieties of English may play a role.
3. Research methods: We will explore ways of analysing phonetic and phonological variation and presenting results. This aspect comprises auditory analysis (i.e. analysis of sounds by ear), acoustic analysis (i.e. measuring and quantifying certain acoustic parameters in the speech signal), and the visualisation of results in tables and plots.
Bringing all of the above together, this workshop aims to raise awareness of the variable pronunciation of English and the patterns it follows, discuss methodological issues, and provide some practical skills. The exact focus of the class will partly depend on the specific interests and backgrounds of participants. Suggestions are therefore not only welcome but expressly invited.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the advanced student of Linguistics to the scientific analysis of how speakers of different natural languages use grammatical constructions in order to convey information in a structured way. Of particular interest in this course will be the interrelations between abstract grammatical (and partly prosodic) structure and actual language usage during communication, and how particular constructions are specialized in serving particular communicative goals. However, we will also discuss the possibilities for speakers to leave particular portions of information and meaning implicit, demanding the addressee to reconstruct what is missing, and interpret the message correctly. Die Veranstaltung kann für Studierende der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft als Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 1 und für das Profilmodul des Bachelorstudiengangs „Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft“ eingebracht werden. Dabei wird die regelmäßige Anwesenheit sowie die Bereitschaft zur Teilnahme am Unterrichtsgespräch erwartet. In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung, wie auch die FlexNow-Prüfungsanmeldung zum Erhalt der 2 ECTS-Punkte, über den FlexNow-Zugang "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" erfolgen.

Inhalt:

Während Spanien aus der Außenperspektive wie eine leidlich gefestigte, einheitliche Nation erscheinen mag, so beobachtet man bei näherer Betrachtung, dass diese Einheit durch eine ganze Anzahl von Regionalismen und peripheren Nationalismen in Frage gestellt wird. Insbesondere die starken Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen in Katalonien und dem Baskenland mit ihrem zentrifugalen Diskurs werden werden von einem erheblichen Teil des restlichen Spaniens als Infragestellung der nationalen Identität Spaniens empfunden und mit einem auf Madrid orientierten zentripetalen Gegendiskurs beantwortet.

In diesem Seminar wollen wir diese Diskurse aufspüren, vergleichen und mithilfe "neuer und neuester" Methoden zu analysieren versuchen. Die Originalität des Seminars besteht darin, neben den etablierten kulturwissenschaftlichen Methoden auch die der kognitiven Soziolinguistik und Semantik und Diskursanalyse zu verwenden.

Inhalt:

Investigating variation in language use Sociolinguistics is concerned with the ways that language usage varies according to social factors: speakers' age and background, the setting in which language is used, levels of formality etc. are among the many factors that can influence the way people use language. In this course we introduce the background to sociolinguistics as a branch of linguistics, and discuss the most important social factors (or variables) that are known to impact on language. We then move on to look at different methodologies in sociolinguistics, including participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews, and discuss issues of data collection and analysis.
We will follow the outline of Meyerhoff (2011), but other literature will be introduced during the course. Participants are expected to contribute towards an investigation of their own design, which will be the basis for a term paper. Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Aufbaumodul 2 des Bachelorstudiengangs Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft

Inhalt:

Die kognitive Linguistik ist keine einheitliche formale Theorie, sondern vielmehr eine moderne und alternative Sichtweise auf dieselben Phänomene, die auch die strukturalistische Sprachwissenschaft bereits zu erklären suchte. Während diese aber Sprache als ein in sich geschlossenes Gesamtsystem zu beschreiben suchte, quasi als Kommunikationsspiele im luftleeren Raum, versucht die kognitive Linguistik die Fortschritte im Bereich der Kognitionspsychologie konsequent zur Beschreibung und Erklärung sprachlicher Phänomene zu nutzen und so der Tatsache Rechnung zu tragen, dass Sprache von Menschen verwendet wird.
Die Vorlesung ist in ihrer Thematik auf weiten Strecken gewissermaßen eine Wiederholung der allgemeinen Einführung in die Sprachwissenschaft, aber aus einer gänzlich neuen Perspektive. Dabei wird es unter anderem darum gegen, wie wir unsere Umwelt kategorisierend erfassen oder wie Sprechen und Denken sich zueinander verhalten.
Grundlage der Vorlesung ist Pörings / Schmitz (2003), ein Einleitungswerk, das in internationaler Kooperation von einem Autorenteam mit jeweils angepassten Beispielen in verschiedenen Sprachen fast zeitgleich veröffentlicht wurde. Ergänzend zur Vorlesung wird eine vertiefende Lektüreübung angeboten.
