Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the three traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the seminar Introduction to Linguistics , which is offered parallel to this lecture. In addition, the lecture will give students a short overview of the world s languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them.

Inhalt:

‘Kurdish’ is a cover term for a bundle of northwest Iranian languages spoken in a region centred on the intersection of today’s Turkey, Iran and Iraq. Two main varieties (or dialects) are distinguished: Northern Kurdish (also known as Kurmanjî), and Central Kurdish (Sorani). In total, there are probably 20 million speakers of Northern and Central Kurdish. In addition, a poorly-defined group known as Southern Kurdish is also recognized. Two other languages or language clusters are sometimes also included within ‘Kurdish’: Zazaki, and Gorani.

Although Kurdish is closely related to Persian (between perhaps 60-75% shared cognates in the CoBL list of basic lexicon), it has retained certain features that characterized Old and early Middle Iranian, but have been entirely lost in Persian. These include a gender distinction on nouns, a remnant inherited case marker, and a tense-based split in alignment: the agreement and case-marking associated with past transitive clauses is distinct from that found in the rest of the grammar. The latter feature has often been discussed under the heading ‘ergativity’, or ‘split ergativity’, but for various reasons it is preferable to use a more neutral label, such as ‘tense-based alignment split’.

Outside of past transitive clauses, Kurdish syntax is relatively simple, and quite similar to Persian. In this course we will take a look at some of the theoretically interesting aspects of the past transitive (‘ergative’ or ‘non-accusative’) structures in Northern and in Central Kurdish, focussing on case and agreement patterns. There is a growing literature on these topics, though of somewhat uneven quality; see Haig (2017b, in German) for a brief overview, and Haig & Öpengin (2014) for a more general overview of Kurdish.

Alternativer Leistungsnachweis: Am Ende des SoSe 2018 wird eine am Lehrstuhl für deutsche Sprachwissenschaft initiierte studentische Tagung zum Thema „Sprache und Gesellschaft“ stattfinden, an deren Organisation auch Eleonore Schmitt beteiligt ist (genauere Informationen werden noch bekannt gegeben). Nach Rücksprache mit der Dozentin können interessierte TeilnehmerInnen des HS „Heritagesprecher und -sprachen“ einen wissenschaftlichen Kurzvortrag bei dieser Tagung halten. Sie werden bei der Vorbereitung dieses Vortrags von Ihrer Dozentin intensiv begleitet und betreut. Statt der Hausarbeit kann der schriftlich ausformulierte Tagungsbeitrag auf dem Tagungsblog veröffentlicht werden. Diese Leistung bildet die Grundlage der Benotung im Rahmen der Modulprüfung.

Empfehlung: Wenn Sie sich für die aktive Teilnahme an der studentischen Tagung und damit für den alternativen Prüfungsmodus entscheiden, ist der Besuch der Methodenübung Statistik für Linguisten/Datenaufbereitung bei Stefan Hartmann/Eleonore Schmitt zu empfehlen, die Sie auf den Vortrag vorbereitet.

Heritage Sprecher beherrschen ihre Umgebungssprache auf muttersprachlichen Niveau, aber besitzen in ihrer Herkunfts- bzw. Erstsprache (heritage language) keine muttersprachlichen Kompetenzen. Fast 20% der in Deutschland lebenden Bevölkerung hat einen Migrationshintergrund, aus dieser Gruppe stammen die meisten Heritage Sprecher. Zum Beispiel ist jemand, der in Deutschland mit einer deutschen Mutter und einem spanischem Vater aufgewachsen ist und daher zusätzlich zu den deutschen Sprachkenntnissen auch noch gewisse Kenntnisse des Spanischen besitzt, ein Heritage Sprecher des Spanischen.

Dieses Seminar bietet zunächst einen Überblick über den aktuellen Forschungsstand zu diesem Mehrsprachigkeitstyp in den klassischen Einwanderungsländern (USA, Kanada, Australien, Neuseeland), charakterisiert die Situation in Deutschland und befasst sich anschließend mit didaktischen Aspekten, die für das erfolgreiche Neuerlernen der Muttersprache relevant sind.

No special knowledge of Armenian is required, but we expect students to be willing to acquire the basics. A knowledge of at least the traditional categories of grammar is expected, and knowledge of Turkish would be an advantage, though is not mandatory. The course will involve travel to Berlin at least once; arrangements will be finalized at the beginning of term.

Inhalt:

Up until the beginning of the 20th Century, Armenian was among the most widely-spoken languages across Anatolia. Today, the only viable community in situ are the Hemshinli (also known as Homshetsma) in the eastern Black Sea region, who converted to Islam at least two centuries ago. However, in the diaspora, scattered speakers do remain from Christian communities from other parts of Anatolia. This seminar aims at compiling a selection of language materials from the spoken vernacular of West Armenian (as opposed to the standard written language widely used in publishing and education in the Armenian diaspora), and making it available as a joint documentary project, preserving a record of a rapidly disappearing cultural memory. Students will thus have an opportunity to acquire an understanding of West Armenian language and culture in its historical context, and to apply the techniques of modern language documentation (recording, transcription, presentation of language material).
The course is jointly organized by Prof. Hartmann, an expert on West Armenian culture and history, and a native speaker of the language, Prof. Haig, an expert on language documentation and analysis, together with Laurentia Schreiber, who is a PhD researcher on linguistic minorities of Turkey. After a brief introduction to the historical and cultural background of the West Armenian communities in todayʼs Turkey, and a short linguistic introduction to West Armenian, we will begin working on speech material gathered with diaspora speakers from Berlin, and (hopefully) with material from Hemshinli speakers now living in Istanbul. The aim is to create a documentary record, including recorded texts, and short grammar sketch, embedded in the framework of a larger project on the history of the Armenian culture in West Armenia.

Inhalt:

The formation of the European nation states in the 19th century has put forward the notion of monolingualism, which is closely related to the states’ national language which has been set as the linguistic ‘default case’. As, however, a closer look at societal diversity reveals, this does often not reflect linguistic reality which leads to conflicts with the so-called ‘minority languages’. The linguistic landscape of the Middle East exhibits a particularly rich linguistic diversity of both larger and many smaller - and often endangered - languages belonging to several language families. In this class, we address both societal and individual aspects of multilingualism: sociolinguistic questions on i.a. language policies will be discussed alongside relevant linguistic concepts and theories on i.a. language contact (Matras 2009; Silva-Corvalan 1994; Thomason 2008, language variation and change (Alexiadou & Lohndal 2016; Meisel 2011), (bilingual) language acquisition (Meisel 2006; Montrul 2008; Schmid et al. 2004), and heritage languages (Montrul 2015; Polinsky 2018). Case studies discussed in this class will have a particular areal focus on minority languages in Turkey, such as Romeyka, and Turkic varieties in Iran. The aim of this course is to provide the participants with the basic theoretical knowledge of how to analyse linguistic variation within a multilingual speech community and enables students to develop and write a term paper on a topic related to multilingual language use.

Inhalt:

Language is our most important social activity. Analysing only its sounds, grammar and the meaning of its words does not tell us the whole story about what we mean with what we say, and why we choose to say it in one way rather than another.

Pragmatics brings into focus the aspects of language use that are often abstracted from in other fields of linguistics, such as the speaker’s and addressee’s intentions, emotions and beliefs, or the situational, social and cultural context of an utterance.

The goal of the course is to provide students with the basic concepts of pragmatics, using current examples of language use – from everyday conversations to journalism, politics, entertainment and literature:

• Deixis: How do we use (verbal and non-verbal) gestures to refer to our environment?
• Inference and presupposition: What information do we take for granted?
• The co-operative principle: How do conversations work? When do they break down?
• Speech acts: How to use a question as a threat (Have you ever had your nose broken?), and a statement as a command (Someone’s grammar skills could be improved.)
• Politeness: How do we address other people and ask favours from each other without causing offense? How do cultures differ in their strategies (“Brits are too polite, Americans are too shallow, Germans are too rude” etc.)?
• Conversational styles: How do we know when it is our turn to speak? Are interruptions, overlaps and silences always awkward?
• Humour: How do jokes work? Why do sitcoms always feature at least one protagonist with questionable social skills?
• Critical discourse analysis: How do the media, politicians, advertising, and everyone else around us try to sell us their side of a story? (And how to do the same yourself.)

Students preparing for their Staatsexamen, in which pragmatics can be selected as a topic, are welcome to join the course as guests. You do not have to register via FlexNow, but please contact your lecturer by email beforehand.

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Inhalt:

In the relatively confined space of Scotland, mainly three languages co-exist, interact, and influence (or have influenced) each other: (i) Scottish Gaelic, the number of whose speakers has decreased dramatically, but which is still an official and strongly supported language of Scotland with an influence on the variety of English spoken in the Highlands; (ii) Scots, which developed out of a northern branch of Old English, functions as a present-day non-standard dialect of English with unique characteristics at all linguistic levels, and is also quite strongly resurgent in literary genres and popular culture; and (iii) Scottish Standard English (SSE), which is popularly described as Standard English spoken with a Scottish accent – a definition that is beginning to be questioned and modified, however.

The following topics will be discussed in this lecture:

• Scottish topography and history and the ways in which they shaped the linguistic landscape over the centuries, resulting in the present-day situation
• Problems involved in the notions of language and dialect as exemplified in the changing roles of English and Scots in Scotland
• The most important characteristics of Scottish English / Scots in pronunciation, grammar and lexicon
• Some influential empirical studies into (mainly urban) varieties of English in present-day Scotland
• Highland English
• Scottish English / Scots in literary works
• Scottish place and family names

ECTS will be awarded for successfully preparing a document using the methods learned in this course. Students of the BA Nebenfach Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft may use this course for their Profilmodul (2 ECTS) or Studium Generale (2 ECTS). Students of the MA General Linguistics may use it for their Erweiterungsbereich via the BA Profilmodul (2 ECTS) or their Mastermodul Sprachwissenschaftliche Methoden (2/4 ECTS).

Inhalt:

This course teaches you how to present linguistic data in an aesthetically pleasing way using the TeX typesetting system, an alternative to common WYSIWYG text processors like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. LaTeX is widely used in many academic fields, and has much to offer to the aspiring linguist.
You will learn about basic book and article design, and how to create simple documents with LaTeX. The techniques taught in this course are aimed at scientific research in general and at linguistics specifically, both from a conceptual and a technical point of view. Some of the more specific topics discussed include:

• formatting linguistic examples,
• generating parse trees and vector graphics,
• handling the complexities of the IPA and Unicode,
• automatic reference and bibliography management,
• the creation of presentation slides,
• Prüfungsamt-compliant title pages,
• and more.

NOTE: This is a course for beginners! No previous knowledge of (La)TeX or digital typography is required. Non-linguists are welcome.

Requirements:

• A document to work on. This can be a paper or thesis you're currently writing or have have completed recently.
• A portable computer (Windows, Linux, or Mac) with an internet connection. The use of tablets is not recommended.
• A bit of patience. The learning curve is steep, but the rewards are great.
