Inhalt:

This course provides an intensive introduction to recent syntactic theory, focusing on the mainstream generative theory. The main thesis of generative grammar is that sentences are generated by a subconscious set of procedures that constitute part of human cognitive capacity. The course discusses how the modern syntactic theory models these mental procedures. The course introduces the main concepts and assumptions of the theory, including the notion of constituency, phrases, syntactic trees, c-command, binding, X-bar theory, movement, and many others.

Inhalt:

This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology) and their meaning (semantics), and the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). The lecture will also give students a short overview of the world's languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them. Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the companion seminar An Introduction to Linguistics, which is offered in parallel to this lecture.

This course discusses methods for doing field research on a non-native language. We talk about several issues: (i) what fieldwork involves, (ii) what the relationship is between the data that we collect and linguistic theory, (iii) how linguistic theory helps us collect data and test our hypotheses, (iv) how we move from the raw empirical data to a research paper. We will discuss elicitation techniques and data handling. During the course, students will have an opportunity to work with a native speaker of Kurdish to practice their elicitation skills.

Die Linguistische Werkstatt ist eine Vortragsreihe mit Diskussionscharakter, in der ein breites Spektrum an linguistischen Fragestellungen behandelt wird. Vorträge werden sowohl von in Bamberg tätigen also auch auswärtigen Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern gehalten; auch Promovierende können die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit vortragen und zur Diskussion stellen. Die Reihe soll vor allem ein Diskussionsforum bieten, das über die Grenzen der einzelnen Fächer hinweg unterschiedliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen innerhalb der Linguistik umfasst. This course introduces students to the languages of the Nakh-Dagestanian family, located in the eastern part of the Northern Caucasus. We will start with a general discussion of the current sociolinguistic and cultural situation in the region and then move to an overview of the languages of the family, concentrating on those grammatical features that are common within this linguistic family. Among many other issues, we will discus the following phenomena found in these languages: case systems, ergativity, evidentiality, gender-number agreement, and person agreement.

Inhalt:

The course introduces students to Tabasaran, a language of the Lezgic branch of the East Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) family. Originally, it is the language of everyday communication of the indigenous people living in traditional villages on the northeastern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. With about 100,000 native speakers, Tabasaran is divided into a number of dialects. The course discusses the core linguistic properties of Tabasaran. It provides an overview of the Tabasaran phonological system, which is rich with consonants unknown in European languages (dento-labial, glottal, ejective and others). We will also discuss the morphological profile of nominal inflection, focusing on the elaborated case system, and of verbs, especially the tense-aspect system. Finally, we will turn to the discussion of the key syntactic features in the language: ergativity, gender-number agreement, and person clitics. During the course, students will listen to audio recordings of the language and try to carry out linguistic analysis of short texts in Tabasaran.

Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

This course builds on the knowledge and skills students have acquired in analyzing linguistic structures in their introductory courses. It discusses a number of interdisciplinary areas of linguistic study, including those investigating social dimensions of language variation, psychological mechanisms of language use and acquisition, and corpus-based studies of pragmatics and discourse structure. Following the theoretical part of this course, students will have the opportunity work on authentic data from a variety of languages.

Inhalt:

This lecture aims to provide a broad overview of the phenomenon of variation, which is a central property of English (and actually all natural languages). In the course of the lecture, we will consider different types of variation at various levels of analysis (orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, etc.) and will look at various dimensions of variation, such as mode/medium (e.g. written vs. spoken language), region (e.g. traditional regional dialects and postcolonial varieties) as well as social (e.g. gender, age, education, profession) and stylistic factors. In addition, attitudes toward variation and related issues such as standardization will be discussed.
