Inhalt
Linguistic typology is the branch of linguistics concerned with establishing the range of cross-language variation, and formulating explanations for the limits to variation. Individual languages differ from each other in many and various ways. However, linguistic research over the past three decades has generally reinforced the view that cross-linguistic variation is not arbitrary, or infinite, but falls with certain definable limits. Language typologists have investigated phonological systems, morphology, various semantic fields (e.g. colour terms), as well as a number of syntactic phenomena. In this course we will look at some of the landmarks in typology over the last 40 years, focussing on topics from morphology and syntax. Language typology and language change
All students are required to regularly sum up class-readings and complete assignments. For the 8 ECTS a term paper is required (min. 14 pages), for 6 ECTS a term paper min. 11 pages.
