• The lecture will be in English.
• Im Vertiefungsmodul wird der Leistungsnachweis durch eine Hausarbeit von mind. 14 Seiten erbracht. Soll die Veranstaltung für das Mastermodul 1 bzw. 4 im MA "General Linguistics" eingebracht werden, gilt ebenfalls eine benotete schriftliche Hausarbeit (nach Absprache) als Leistungsnachweis.

Inhalt:

Linguistic fieldwork is the activity of a linguist collecting and analyzing data from a language, often other than one’s native language and often within a community of speakers of that language. The prototypical linguistic fieldwork is a research with the goal of collecting primary linguistic data from a previously undescribed or underdescribed language. This course introduces various stages of linguistic fieldwork, from the preparation of the work to the archiving and presentation of results. Through the work with a speaker of a language in class, this course will teach how to collect lexical data, describe phonology, elicit morphological and syntactic information, and make recordings and analysis of spontaneous texts.

Die Veranstaltung kann auch als Vorlesung für das Profilmodul (2 ECTS) und das Vertiefungsmodul (2 ECTS) im BA-Nebenfach "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" besucht werden.

Inhalt:

Syntactic analysis is an introduction to the study of natural language syntax. The first part of this course presents a descriptive overview of various syntactic issues with the focus on clause-level phenomena, such argument structure, case marking, agreement, subjecthood, and valency alternations. The second part of the course aims to introduce students to the current theoretical approaches to the analysis of the phenomena, as represented by GB/Minimalism and, to a lesser degree, LFG. A variety of approaches will be discussed and the recent historical developments are emphasized. The overall goal of the course is to give an idea of linguistic diversity in the domain of syntax and to introduce major theoretical notions currently employed in syntactic analysis.
