- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Sound knowledge of grammatical terminology, interest in lesser-known languages. The course is particularly suitable for those who attended Professor Haase’s lecture series on language classification.
- Inhalt
- Language typology refers broadly to a research agenda, a set of practices and goals, rather than to a particular theory of language. Like most general linguists, typologists are concerned with the question of what constitutes a possible human language, and why human language is the way it is. But typologists approach these questions primarily by investigating the actually attested variation in the languages of the world. Thus in principle, data from all languages, regardless of status or number of speakers, is equally relevant in typology. This lecture series covers the most important developments within typology over the past 40 years, and is illustrated with data from a variety of different languages. Topics covered include syllable structure, sampling issues, areal typology, word-order typology, discourse-structure typology, morphological typology, and language universals.
