WICHTIG: Es stehen vier Parallelkurse zur Verfügung. Die Termine A und B finden Sie in Flexnow bei der Englischen Literaturwissenschaft, die Termine C und D bei der Amerikanistik. Bitte entscheiden Sie sich frühzeitig für EINEN Termin! Studierende, die sich gleichzeitig für mehrere Kurse "Introduction to English and American Literature" anmelden, werden nach Maßgabe der Kurskapazitäten einem Kurs zugeteilt.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.
Please note that the first tutorial will take place AFTER the first regular session!

Inhalt:

What started in the mid-1950s as a small circle of unpublished friends soon became known as America’s first major Cold War literary movement, and as one of the most successful free speech movements in American literature. The Beat generation forever changed their country’s ideas about what literature–and poetry in particular–can do. Loosely associated with the time’s jazz rhythms, with underground drug cultures and the proliferation of Eastern spirituality, the Beats have become a symbol for the protest movements of the younger generation of the 1950s, 60s and beyond.

This seminar will focus on a broad selection of the Beats’ novels, stories, poems, and other works, including their achievements in the visual arts. We will discuss the most well-known writers of the group—Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Gary Snyder and Lawrence Ferlinghetti—as well as texts by celebrated feminist Beat poet Diane Di Prima, by Amiri Baraka, who was closely affiliated with the Beats in his early years, and by Charles Bukowski, who was never part of the actual Beat circle but whose texts share some of their overall features and are read by many Beat enthusiasts. The overall Beat environment will be covered as well, most notably the socio-economic, post-war setting and the literary roots that inspired the Beats and the jazz/bebop ties. In particular, their way of leading a non-conformist live and their attacks on materialism, militarism, consumerism and conformity will be observed more closely, focusing on the issues of sexuality and drugs, friendship and travelling.

Kerouac’s On the Road should be read before the beginning of the class. All other texts will be provided in time via the Virtual Campus.

In the Virtual Campus you will also find the topics for the oral presentations. Please choose a topic and sign in on the respective topic. You will choose one topic, which you should discuss for approximately ten minutes in class with focus on one thesis concerning the text, as well as a shorter introduction to a literary phenomenon or period, which should be on a different day from your thesis-presentation. Please send your handout and thesis to the instructor two weeks before your representation.
