Modulanbindungen
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.

Prerequisites:
Participants must have passed the Introduction to English Linguistics; ideally, participants will have passed English Phonetics and Phonology as well.

Inhalt:

This seminar combines a general introduction to contact linguistics with a more specific discussion of the social, political, and linguistic consequences (and prerequisites) of contact between English and other languages. Some of the concepts that will be discussed are language maintenance, endangerment and death, substrate theory, and pidgins and creoles. Building upon theories and models of language contact, case studies of contact-induced changes of English at different linguistic levels (lexical, phonological, morphological and syntactic) will be discussed. The seminar deals mostly with present-day varieties of English that have been (or still are being) shaped through contact (e.g. Scottish and Irish English, African Englishes, Caribbean Englishes), but we may also look at the way in which historical contact between English and other languages contributed to the emergence of present-day Standard English.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.
