Inhalt:

Description:

The lecture provides an overview of the many ways in which the two major national varieties of English differ. As is well-known, British and American English diverge systematically in the pronunciation and distribution of certain phonemes and allophones. Similarly well-known are differences in the vocabulary, which happen to provide a frequently discussed topic in the teaching of English. Above and beyond such phonetic/phonological and lexical differences, recent research has shown that on the grammatical level, there is also a not-to-be-underestimated number of major and minor contrasts. These include differences in word formation, grammatical morphology, word order as well as syntactic relations.

The lecture will contextualize linguistic contrasts with a view to the historical evolution of the relationship between British and American English and pragmatic differences characterizing speakers' linguistic behaviour. It will equally aim at discovering system-inherent orientations that account for variety-specific tendencies. For this purpose, the diachronic dimension of the contrasts will be given an important place, and issues such as the myth of the colonial lag, the world-wide leadership of American English, formality and colloquialization will crop up repeatedly.

Inhalt:: Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.

Inhalt:

Nothing is permanent except change. This well-known saying by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus is very much true of language, even though we tend to think of it as something static that can be set down in grammar books and exhaustively listed in dictionaries. Many of us think of language change as something belonging to the distant past, where examples are more prominent. Rather than dealing with old hats, this seminar will however be concerned with relatively recent developments in the 20^th and 21^st centuries, which implies that their completion may yet be pending and we may at present witness the variation typical of such as situation.

We will focus on grammatical (i.e. morphological and syntactic) examples, such as the s-genitive, adjective gradation, contractions, modal auxiliaries and semi-modals, the perfect, the progressive, the passive, the future, the subjunctive, complex predicates, non-finite clauses, relative clauses etc. Methodological issues will be addressed as well as the question of which factors drive or impede change. We will consider language-internal (functional) forces as well as general trends such as colloquialization, Americanization, densification etc.

It will be shown that some changes are continuations of long-standing trends whereas others have occurred quite unexpectedly. The course will make students realize that English is a changing language, and that we are right in the midst of this permanent flux.

Participants will be asked to present current research in class and to carry out their own small-scale analyses of relevant phenomena in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesdays, 11:00 - 11:45 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, empirical analyses and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
