Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.

Inhalt:

Genre, Register & Style - These three concepts offer us a unique perspective on variation in human language. The terms are deeply ingrained in our understanding of language and help us to quickly navigate the maze of everyday communication.
Naturally, our first goal in this seminar is to disentangle these three concepts and find suitable working definitions. Once this is done, we will turn our focus to the following topics (among others, of course):

• How could a framework for analysing different genres or registers look like?
• Are these stable concepts or do they develop over time?
• Does style reveal something about the author?
• Did the digital revolution spawn new genres (think blogs, etc.) or can traditional genres change medium (think online newspapers)?

Im BA-Hauptfach Anglistik/Amerikanistik ist die Übung Methoden und Theorien in einem der beiden Teilbereiche zu wählen, in denen die Aufbaumodule absolviert werden.
Im BA-Nebenfach Anglistik/Amerikanistik zu 30 ECTS Punkten ist die Übung Methoden und Theorien in dem Teilbereich zu wählen, in dem auch das Aufbaumodul absolviert wird.

Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.
