General organization

Im BA-Hauptfach Anglistik/Amerikanistik ist die Übung Methoden und Theorien in einem der beiden Teilbereiche zu wählen, in denen die Aufbaumodule absolviert werden.
Im BA-Nebenfach Anglistik/Amerikanistik zu 30 ECTS Punkten ist die Übung Methoden und Theorien in dem Teilbereich zu wählen, in dem auch das Aufbaumodul absolviert wird.

Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.

Inhalt:

The past decades have seen an incredible advance in the fields of technology and information processing. It has become natural that texts, books, dictionaries and even entire encyclopedias are stored electronically and are easily accessible.
Undoubtedly, the sheer amount of information at our fingertips has become overwhelming, but also offers us endless new possibilities for linguistic research. Linguists nowadays have access to large databases of naturalistic data. We can now, for example, analyze large precompiled collections of texts for regional variation or compare newspaper archives to find out how certain topics are represented in the media.

The field of linguistics that is devoted to the analysis of large text collections is referred to as corpus linguistics.

This course is designed to be as much hands-on as possible! So we will not only find out about the traditional approaches in corpus linguistics, but put our newly gained knowledge to use and try out most methods ourselves.

No prior technical knowledge is required.
