Inhalt:

The aim of this course is to introduce basic concepts and principles of English language teaching and to discuss them in the light of practical application and classroom procedure. The course includes a discussion of the following: theories of language learning and acquisition, approaches and methods in ELT, teaching vocabulary / grammar / the skills / literature, the principles of lesson planning, error analysis, and assessment procedures in the classroom.
Please note: The attendance of the additional Übung “Academic Writing in TEFL” is strongly recommended, as it aims to support students in acquiring general academic skills and in completing their portfolios. Please register via FlexNow if you would like to attend.

Important:
1. You should not register for more than one parallel course. This can lead to you being excluded. This does not apply to the waiting list.
2. Not attending the first session of the course can lead to you being excluded.
3. Erasmus/foreign students cannot be guaranteed a place in this seminar. These students must arrange a personal appointment with the lecturer during the last week of the semester break.
4. Preference will be given to students in higher semesters, and it is strongly recommended that students in their first semester do not attend this course.

Inhalt:

Im Seminar widmen wir uns im Sinn eines erweiterten Textbegriffs (siehe LehrplanPlus, Text- und Medienkompetenz, Gymnasium) dem Umgang mit verschiedenen Textformen, von der Statistik über das Meme und die Netflix Serie bis zu Shakespeares Werken. Wir erarbeiten, welche psycholinguistischen Prozesse beim Lesen am Werk sind und welche Ziele wir mit dem Einsatz von Texten verfolgen. Wir beleuchten, welche Texte sich wie im FSU einsetzen lassen, wie wir mit dem Textangebot der Lehrwerke umgehen können und wie wir unsere Schüler:innen fördern müssen, damit sie durch den Umgang mit Texten zu inter bzw. transkultureller Kompetenz und critical (media) literacy gelangen. Darüber hinaus werden wir uns mit den Möglichkeiten (und Grenzen) der Bewertung von Textarbeit auseinandersetzen. Das Seminar bietet neben einem theoretischen Input zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, erste praktische Erfahrungen zu sammeln, etwa durch das Entwerfen von eigenen Stundenskizzen, die Arbeit mit Apps und digitalen Tools und ggf. eine Kooperation mit einer Partnerschule.

Unterrichtssprache ist wahlweise Deutsch oder Englisch. Das Seminar ist aufgrund seiner thematischen Ausrichtung für Studierende des Lehramts an Grundschulen weniger geeignet. In der Regel gibt es zu jeder Sitzung vorbereitende (Lese-)Aufgaben, deren Bearbeitung als Grundlage vorausgesetzt wird.

The focus of the seminar, in which the term text is broadly interpreted (see LehrplanPlus, Text- und Medienkompetenz, Gymnasium), is on dealing with various text types, from statistics to memes, Netflix series and Shakespeare s plays. We examine the psycholinguistic processes that lead to reading comprehension and which objectives teachers pursue when working with texts. We will investigate how we can use which texts in the EFL classroom and how teachers can deal with the texts offered by EFL coursebooks. Furthermore, we will ponder how our students can acquire inter- and transcultural competence and critical (media) literacy by working with texts. Finally, we will discuss possibilities (and limitations) of assessing and evaluating comprehension. Apart from theoretical input, the seminar offers ample opportunity for students to collect practical experiences, e. g. by designing lessons, and working with digital tools and apps. A cooperation with a partner school is intended.

The language of the seminar is German or English. Due to its topic, the seminar is less suited for students of primary education. For most of the sessions participants are asked to prepare (reading) assignments which serve as a basis for delving into the subject.
