Inhalt:

“It’s not so much lest we forget, as lest we remember. […] [T]here’s no better way of forgetting something than by commemorating it.” Alan Bennett’s celebrated play, The History Boys (2004), alludes to the tendency of modern European societies to elide or altogether erase the human realities of war and conflict. But now that large-scale war has (once again) crashed back into the geopolitics of our continent, the task of ethically recording and remembering has shown itself to be more vital – if also more contested – than ever before.

This seminar will begin with a consideration of British cultures of remembrance around the two World Wars: a set of rituals of collective memory which often tread a fine line between sombre remembrance on one hand, and a thinly disguised glorification of the dead on the other. This memory culture will be placed in dialogue with the poetry of soldiers who served at the front line in the trenches of the Great War – and of the women many of them had to leave behind. We then turn to a much more recent representation of World War I, Pat Barker's much-celebrated Regeneration (1991): a novel which offers a brilliant yet disturbing insight into the traumatic lived experience(s) of industrial warfare. Empire of the Sun (1984), made into a film by Steven Spielberg three years later, is the British author J. G. Ballard’s surreal reimagining of his own childhood experience as a British expat in an internment camp in the wake of the UK’s declaration of war against the Japanese Empire in 1941. Finally, we turn to Graham Greene’s The Quiet American (1955), a novel set in 1950s Vietnam, which serves in retrospect as a prescient critique of the dawning era of American military interventions.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:

Humanity is on a “highway to climate hell”, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres warned the international Cop27 Climate Summit in November 2022. Even if implemented in full, current international plans for climate action will likely result in global heating of at least 2.5C above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. But as unambiguous as the science now is, the everyday realities of life in radically transformed ecosystems can be astonishingly difficult to imagine. In this seminar we will be considering the ways in which modern and contemporary British literature has attempted to do just that.

Climate fiction – “cli-fi” – is a sub-genre of literary dystopia that can trace its roots back to the 1960s, and most prominently (and surreally) to the British author J. G. Ballard’s early work. After engaging with the British eco-critic Timothy Morton’s theories of ‘dark ecology’, we will turn to one of the cli-fi’s starting points: Ballard’s early environmental dystopia, The Drought (1965), which imagines a catastrophic world almost entirely emptied of its most precious commodity. We will then be discussing David Mitchell’s critically and commercially acclaimed bestseller, Cloud Atlas (2004): a speculative epic which traces the fraught relationship between humankind and nature across vast canvases of space and time. Finally, we conclude with two speculative projections of the impact of environmental catastrophe on contemporary British society: Sarah Hall’s The Carhullan Army (2007), a dark science fiction memoir set in the North of England, which interweaves themes of environmental collapse and biopolitical control; and John Lanchester’s The Wall (2019), hailed for its imaginative negotiations of a welter of anxieties about rising sea levels, anti-refugee populism, intergenerational conflict, and the creeping scarcity of shared resources.

Am 2. August 2023 im KR12/02.05 (09.30-11:00 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden der Einführungskurse von Dr. Craig und Prof. Dr. Jansohn statt, die die Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden innerhalb von drei Tagen (hier gelten die Bestimmungen unter: https://www.uni-bamberg.de/anglistik/studium/informationen-zur-attestpflicht/ ) im Original vorgelegt werden.
