Inhalt:
Language is the primary means of communication between human beings, and thus an integral aspect of our ability to act collectively, and to create human societies. Language is not just a means of exchanging information; it is also a way of expressing or evoking emotions, attracting attention, marking boundaries, or establishing connections and solidarity. In this course we introduce the main concepts of sociolinguistics, a sub-discipline of linguistics at the intersection with sociology, anthropology, and social psychology. The main source is Meyerhoff (2011), but other material will also be made available via the VC. Topics to be covered include: Variation: regional, social class, gender, age Methods for conducting sociolinguistic research: defining linguistic variables; data collection and analysis Language attitudes Multilingualism and language choices

Inhalt:
This course begins with some fundamental questions regarding the respective roles of quantitative versus qualitative methdologies in the social sciences, and considers recent attempts to apply quantitative methodologies in the social sciences. We then move on to look at some more practical applications of quantitative methodologies in linguistics. We will then consider some concrete examples of applying quantitative methodologies in linguistics, considering methods of data collection (observation, experimental settings, surveys and questionnaires). In the latter part of the course we introduce the basics of quantitative analysis in the form of descriptive statistics (absolute versus relative values; measures of dispersion, mean, median, mode, testing for significance). Students will also have the opportunity to conduct their own investigation and apply the knowledge acquired in the course.

Please also register on the VC. If you have problems with the registration plesase contact admin.aspra@uni-bamberg.de.
Inhalt:
The colloquium is intended for anyone who is currently working on a master’s thesis, or who is intending to start a thesis sometime in the next 12 months. For students in the master’s programme, attending the research colloquium counts as the "Research module" (6 ECTS), which is part of the mandatory programme schedule. The colloquium is open to other interested students.

The format and content of the colloquium is flexible and depends on students' interests, so students should be prepared to take initiative in formulating questions that are relevant for advancing their knowledge. In order to gain 6 ECTS points, students are expected to present and discuss their work, which could be, depending on the progress of their topic: discussion of possible research questions, appropriate methods, relevant theoretical background; presentation of current state of the thesis (background, sources, methods, perhaps initial results), in order to receive feedback and guidance. We allow 45 minutes, including discussion, for these presentations. Students are also expected to actively and regularly participate in the discussion and feedback.

Please enrol on the VC for this course before 17th October 2022 if you intend to attend the research colloquium.

Inhalt:
This course provides a systematic introduction and overview of the grammar of Turkish, the official language of Turkey / Türkiye. We will cover the main points of phonology, morphology and syntax, building on examples and exercises provided in the course. Turkish is an excellent case study for understanding many fundamental issues of grammatical analysis which are found in many other languages as well, in particular vowel harmony; agglutinative morphology, and head-directionality in both morphology and syntax. Students will be expected to complete regular assignments for gaining ECTS points. The most important reference for this course is the grammar of Turkish by Göksel & Kerslake (2005); sections will be provided on the VC.

Inhalt:
Individual languages differ from each other in many ways. However, linguistic research over the past five decades has generally reinforced the view that cross-linguistic variation is neither arbitrary, nor infinite, but falls with certain definable limits. Language typology is the branch of linguistics concerned with establishing the range of cross-language variation, mapping its distribution in time and space, and formulating explanations for the attested variation. Language typologists have investigated phonological systems, morphology, various semantic fields (e.g. colour terms), as well as a number of syntactic phenomena. In this course we will look at some of the landmarks in typology, focussing on topics from syntax.
The topics treated will be a selection of the following: • Language typology: background and assumptions • Typology and universals: Greenberg’s heritage • Word-order typology • Causatives • Differential Object Marking • Animacy • On explanations for language universals: the nature vs. nurture debate
