- Inhalt
- Mindfulness is often described as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 4). Mindfulness is a topic with a deep history and it has received a lot of attention in recent decades due to findings associating it with both psychological and physical health. In this seminar we will focus on mindfulness within the context of psychological study: we will consider the effects of mindfulness as a trait, mindfulness practices such as meditation, and mindfulness-based interventions. Associations between mindfulness and other measures will be explored, such as between mindfulness and personality, well-being, social behaviour, and cognition. Further, we will discuss what might underlie these relationships. For example, why might a mindful attitude help to reduce stress, or how might it influence how we compassionately respond to others? We will critically discuss research methods in mindfulness research methods so as to be able to better evaluate popular findings. Students will receive relevant readings as well as a practical introduction to mindfulness exercises.
