Inhalt:

The course serves as an introduction to population studies and dynamics. It is planned that the course will address four groups of topics that are interrelated with each other.

• Demographic transition: The rest of the course is considered to be built upon this main part. It emphasizes the main changes in human history (i.e., transition from short life and large families to longer lives and smaller families).
• Growth and control: This part will mainly point out how the increase in per capita consumption and growth challenges individuals’ present and future (e.g., depletion of resources such as water and energy).
• Aging population and low fertility: World population (especially the Western countries) has experienced demographic transition and populations become older in terms of various measures. This transition has considerable consequences such as concerns about the sustainability of current financial obligations toward elderly. Furthermore, the primary cause of population aging is considered to be the decreasing fertility rates. We will explore the factors driving low fertility (e.g., the incomplete revolution of women, social interaction effects).
• Migration and globalization: With globalization the extent of international migration has become substantially large. This increase in migration has considerable consequences on both sending and receiving countries. In the last part of the course we will focus on that.

Inhalt:

This course deals with core concepts, measures and models that demographers use to understand population dynamics including general methods such as standardization and smoothing. Specifically, the course deals with techniques designed for the analysis of fertility, nuptiality, and mortality. Students will employ these techniques with Stata and learn data management. Some approaches that will be discussed during the course are (i) understanding the determinants of population growth, (ii) estimating mortality and fertility rates using indirect techniques, and (iii) examining the influence of unobserved heterogeneity on health and mortality. The course aims to familiarize students with tools and concepts that have been broadly used by demographers. Furthermore, the students will learn how to apply demographic methods using Stata software.

Inhalt:

In West Germany, 38 % of respondents agree, that a preschool child is likely to suffer if his or her mother works. (ISSP, 2012). In contrast, only 18 % of East Germans agree with the statement, while even less people in Sweden do (15 %). Where do these differences in gender role attitudes come from? Do gender ideologies differ between men and women, older and younger cohorts or respondents with different educational attainment or migration background? The seminar offers an introduction to the research on gender ideologies and gender role attitudes. In the seminar we will, firstly, look at different theoretical and empirical explanations of differences in gender culture and gender ideologies between different welfare states or social groups. Secondly, we will discuss whether life-course events and state interventions are associated with ideology changes over the life-course. Throughout the course, we will use theoretical core readings as well as empirical research papers applying both cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs. Therefore, prior knowledge of statistics up to the level of ordinary least squares regression (OLS) is assumed.

Inhalt:

1. Spezifische Themen der Familiensoziologie wie Homogamie (Similarität in Bezug auf Partnermerkmale), (Konsequenzen von) Ehescheidung, Geschlechterungleichheit in der Ausbildung und am Arbeitsmarkt 2. Wichtige theoretische und methodische Fortschritte: a. Makro-Mikro-Interaktionen b. Institutionelle Erklärungen (von Typologien bis zu Kontinuummaßen) c. Länderübergreifende vergleichende Konzepte mithilfe longitudinaler Designs 3. Studenten zu lehren, die neuesten Fortschritte in einem Teilgebiet der Familiensoziologie auf Basis eines Literatur-Reviews zu formulieren (so dass man auf die Masterarbeit gut vorbereitet ist).
