Inhalt
Understanding and explaining social action has been a key task and cardinal problem of sociology ever since. What motivates, drives and guides the action of people? Can they be explained by focusing on individual action? Or is it rather the respective, cultural, historical religious or political context that determine social action? Sociological thinkers have developed a variety of theoretical explanations. Proponents of rational choice theories conceive of the individual as a rational agent, capable of processing information in the light of pre-existing preferences. Ethnomethodologists on the other hand are stressing the significance of routines, that is cultural patterns that free the individual from calculation, allowing those acquainted with the respective social/cultural norms to instantly knowing what to do. The seminar will provide an overview of the most important theories of social action such as rational choice, symbolic interactionism, ethnomedthodology. It will then proceed to investigating selected forms of social action (e.g. deviant behaviour) and analysing specific problems (e.g. new information and the problem of cognitive dissonance ) to test the advantages but also the limits of the respective theories.
