Inhalt:
Working life and family arrangements in European societies are in change: employment histories become more flexible, the labour market participation of women and mothers is rising, and an increasing number of older people continues working beyond retirement age. These developments have implications for the financial and subjective wellbeing of individuals. As a consequence, new challenges for welfare states arise to secure the wellbeing, income, working conditions, and work-life-balance of their citizens. Labour market, family, and pension policies as well as cultural norms and economic and structural conditions play an important role in this context. The course will address the relationships between individuals' employment, family life, and wellbeing on the one hand, and welfare state policies, and structural and cultural characteristics on the other hand. The main focus will be on the realisation of an own empirical analysis with data of the European Social Survey (ESS). Therefore, we will learn the statistical technique of multilevel modelling which is necessary to analyse international survey data. The course will be taught as compact seminar on four days in January 2018 (dates tba). A preparatory meeting will take place in the first week of October 2017. The course is a good preparation for students who plan to write their Bachelor thesis using the ESS or similar comparative survey data. Participants of the course are required to have prior knowledge of data management and multivariate analyses with Stata (e.g. OLS regression with the regress command). The seminar "Comparing welfare state, work and family policies - theoretical approaches and empirical findings" complements this course. It is recommended to participate in both seminars during the summer semester. Assessment: Presentation, term paper including own analysis with the ESS data
