At least in Germany there have been documented 2 waves of research that had concentrated on the transition of youth from education to first employment. In the process of these studies the scholars managed not only to state that education system and labour market develop and change parallel but also to reveal some persistent features that influence the transition from studies to employment.
Diverse sociological studies have explicitly proved, that such categories as social class and origin, gender and years of education play the most important role in life of individuals and significantly influence the inequality between individuals/different groups of people. Granovetter and afterwards other scientists had shown that also social networks could be a substantial factor of success in occupational career just in the very beginning of the latter one. Still, in different countries these characteristics influence the transition to work differently: Western and Eastern Europe represent different patterns and scenarios of transition.
The course is taught in English and is oriented on the students of introductory study period (Grundstudium) who are interested in questions of comparative research. It is expected that participants regularly attend the course, actively participate in it and prepare presentations (Referate). Not at last is expected that students develop their own short essays to the end of the course – either in English or in German. The same applies to presentations (Referate).
