- The seminar will place particular emphasis on empirical research articles; therefore, a profound basic knowledge of quantitative/statistical research methods is essential for attendance. The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate international students’ course attendance. The examination consists of a short presentation (20 %), discussion questions (20 %) and the submission of a seminar paper (60 %). The registration to the seminar and the examination via FlexNow is necessary for the acquisition of a certificate.

- Questions and concerns about the “integrability” of Islam and Muslims in Germany and Western Europe dominate public and politic debates about migration and integration, terrorism and (right-wing) populism. At the center: prejudices, doubts, fears and hostility towards Muslims, mostly justified with perceived discrepancies in religion and culture. The seminar deals with the question to what degree Muslims in Germany and Europe are actually integrated. Instead of taking a structural perspective on integration (in for example education and work), the seminar focuses solely on socio-cultural factors like religion, values, attitudes, identity, language – culture in the broadest sense. To what degree do Muslims acculturate in their values, attitudes, religion and their ethnic and religious identity? We will read some introductory texts dealing with the question if and why Muslim integration should be different in comparison to other migrant groups. In the second part of the seminar, we will read some empirical research results about values and attitudes, religion, identity and further integration dimensions of Muslim immigrants in Western Europe.

- Inhalt:
- During the last 60 years, European countries have increasingly become destinations for (international) immigrants and asylum seekers. Despite being a core issue for the respective national governments, many of these immigrant groups fare worse than natives in terms of labor market outcomes. Moreover, there are considerable differences between the EU countries, in how these immigrants are integrating into the respective labor markets. Yet, systematic research that explains these differences is still somewhat scarce.
This course aims to give a general overview of the cross-country differences in labor market integration and introduce crucial theoretical arguments brought forth to explain these differences. We will particularly focus on the interplay between the immigrants’ individual characteristics and the institutional characteristics of the different destination countries.
In terms of structure, the course consists of three parts. The first part gives an overview of the immigrant population and respective labor market integration in Europe. Subsequently, theoretical arguments to explain these labor market outcomes are introduced. The second part then deals with data sources (and indicators) available to test the theoretical arguments. The third part sets out to assess the empirical evidence on how important the respective explanations are. The class will close with a “thinktank” on directions for future research.

- Das Thema Migration und Integration von Zugewanderten hat in den letzten Jahren national sowie international an Aufmerksamkeit gewonnen und steht in Debatten immer wieder im Fokus. Die erfolgreiche Gestaltung des Integrationsprozesses und der Umgang mit Vielfalt ist eine der großen gesellschaftlichen Herausforderung in Ländern, in denen Menschen mit vielfältigen ethnischen Hintergründen zusammenleben. Im Seminar werden verschiedene Maßnahmen zur Unterstützung des Integrationsprozesses von Zugewanderten und des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts anhand ausgewählter praxisnaher Berichte, wissenschaftlicher Artikel und Evaluationsergebnisse zur Umsetzung und Wirkung der Maßnahmen in verschiedenen relevanten Bereichen der Integration besprochen. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Einführung in die Thematik Integration anhand der Diskussion vorhandener Integrationsmaßnahmen in Deutschland und dem Vergleich mit der Situation in anderen Ländern auf europäischer bzw. internationaler Ebene.

We will also examine why certain authors suggest that the identification of special educational needs is unjustified for some of these groups. Secondly, we will examine which type of schooling should be most beneficial for educational achievement and educational motivation when children are identified with special educational needs. We will critically review all applied arguments and methods used to assess these arguments.
