S: Bildungssoziologie: Migration und Bildung: Accounting for ethnic inequalities in education

Dozent/in:
Julian Seuring
Angaben:
Seminar, 2 SWS
Termine:
Di, 10:00 - 12:00, F21/03.03
Inhalt:
Inequalities of educational opportunities in the German educational system have become the subject of increasing debate since the PISA-Study 2000 revealed that educational inequalities are highly pronounced in Germany compared to other European countries. Previous research indicates that particularly ethnic minority students seem to face difficulties to catch up with their counterparts without immigration background.

The Seminar provides an overview of the magnitude and persistence of ethnic inequalities across the educational career in Germany. We will discuss empirical studies focusing on differences in educational achievement as well as educational attainment between ethnic minority and majority students. Moreover, we will discuss several theoretical explanations for ethnic inequalities within a general framework of competence development and educational decisions. The aim of the seminar is to qualify the participants to interpret results of (advanced) statistical analyses and to systematically link theoretical considerations to empirical findings.
