Inhalt:

The seminar elaborates on the particular situation of families with children in different societies. Specifically, it addresses:

• financial and institutional frameworks,
• fertility rates and normative birth behaviors,
• parenting norms concerning styles and goals,
• intra-familial gender arrangements and their reflections in labor market participation and the division of household chores,
• topics outside the box according to students interest.

Though the main focus is on the cultural and structural framework in East and West Germany, strong emphasis is also laid on an international comparison. For example, I plan to host a panel discussion with colleagues from Asia (e.g., China, India, Japan, Pakistan) and Africa (e.g., Ethiopia, Ghana) to exchange experiences regarding family norms, cultural peculiarities and structural conditions. Hopefully, German and international students feel encouraged to round out the emerging picture with their respective contributions. Students assessment will be based on a 30 minute presentation and a seminar paper at the end of the term. The date for a preparatory session (e.g., to assign topics for the presentation) is yet to be announced.
