Inhalt:

Lewis Coser’s ‘The Functions of Social Conflict’ and Ralf Dahrendorf`s ‘Class and Class Conflict in Industrial Society’ are seminal works in the sociology of conflict because they show the effects of conflict on social change and social cohesion. Both studies were published in the 1950s and they contributed significantly to the development of sociological theory. The main thesis is that conflict is not dysfunctional, but a necessary and fruitful impetus for social change. Coser’s and Dahrendorf`s works are still worth reading, especially if you are interested in political sociology, the study of social movements or civil society.

Inhalt:

Die Vorlesung geht auf zentrale Theorien und Begriffe der Medien- und Kommunikationssoziologie ein. Der Ausgangspunkt sind zunächst unterschiedliche theoretische Perspektiven auf die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Medien und Kommunikation. Hierbei stehen vor allem die Arbeiten von Jürgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann und Richard Münch im Fokus. Ausgehend davon sind zentrale Themen der Vorlesung die Entwicklung von Medien bzw. Mediensystemen und Öffentlichkeit, der Einfluss von Medien auf die soziale Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit, die Wirkung von Medien sowie die gesellschaftliche Relevanz von sozialen Medien. Die Vorlesung führt somit in grundlegende Themen und Theorien der Medien- und Kommunikationssoziologie ein.
