Grundkurs I (for Repeaters) (Frau Smith) -

- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

Only those students who have to repeat the Grundkurs I exams this semester are eligible for this course!
Due to the sizes of the rooms, only 18 people can be admitted to each course!
- Inhalt:
- As you probably know, we normally exclude students who do not manage to pass the Grundkurs I exams at the first attempt from attending the “regular” classes again. As we have additional teaching capacity this semester, we have decided to offer two parallel courses (meeting on Tuesday OR Friday) for those students who need to repeat the Grundkurs I exams this semester. The content of the two classes is identical.
The course will address some of the typical errors made by those whose English was and is not of the same standard as other beginning students at our university. Whether you failed the course last semester by just a few points or maybe by 20 or 30, it should be clear to you that you were below the standard required to be awarded a minimal pass for Grundkurs I. Your goal now will be to make sure that you at least pass the course the second time round, even if your achievement may still be not sufficient to justify a higher grade than a mere pass!
By looking at common errors and using example exercises as additional practice material, we hope that as many of you as possible make sufficient progress with the help of this course to continue in your studies!
Please register in this course for the GKI exams (in FlexNow)!
Please note that this course is an offer that we might not be able to make every semester, so seize this chance to take the course now!

- Inhalt:
- Activities in Grundkurs I focus on the three fundamental skills in the English language (reading, listening and writing). The aim is to make participants more proficient in understanding spoken and written English and to write with confidence. In this respect, Grundkurs I should be seen as an introduction to the skills necessary for the study of English and as a clear indicator for the participants' further progress in their university studies.
There will be two central examinations for all Grundkurs I classes, which will take place outside of regular class time and which can only be taken on the dates given on the notice boards in U9 and in Luitpoldstrasse 5. Students participating in class are required to register for these exams via FlexNow!
The course can only be attended in one semester, although the examinations are open to those students who were not successful in passing the course at the first attempt. In this semester, we are offering two “Grundkurs I for Repeater” classes; we advise those who have to repeat to attend these classes, but, if this is not possible, please note the following information:
The content of all of the parallel Grundkurs I classes is identical.

It is recommended, especially for Lehramt students, to attend both the US and GB Landeskunde courses during their studies; students can specialize in either GB or US, but are strongly advised to have knowledge of both countries.

- This course focuses on both current and historical aspects of topics in American life. While Landeskunde US I is a lecture course, this course is intended to be more interactive: the instructor will provide an introduction into each topic and students are asked to present a portion of a topic to the class. This presentation should not only be seen as an opportunity to speak about the material, but a chance for students to practice (and receive feedback regarding) their spoken language skills before proceeding to their examinations. Like Landeskunde US I, this course is seen as preparation for the Landeskunde portion of later examinations.
Requirements for credits for this class will be discussed at the start of the semester. Please make sure you are there in the first class!

- Inhalt:
- The focus of the course will be on South Africa during Apartheid. In 1948 the National Party came to power and implemented the policy of racial discrimination in South Africa, apartheid (the Afrikaans word for ‘apartness’). This ideology, which permeated all spheres of life, was to shape the nation for almost 50 years – half a century of segregation, oppression, censorship, persecution of opponents and violence. Apartheid was officially abolished with the first democratic elections in April 1994. A new era started under the presidency of Nelson Mandela, and South Africa came to be known as the ‘Rainbow Nation’. However, the political past still troubles this country to today.
In this course we will explore and discuss topics such as race, power and colonialization, media and its censorship, governmental opposition and everyday life in South Africa.
More information will be given in the course on the requirements for credits in this course.

- Inhalt:
- This course will concentrate on three major themes that have governed America's dealings with Europe since 1945: foreign policy, economics and culture. These themes will be studied in chronological order, from the end of the WW2 up to the present. Foreign policy issues will include: the Cold War, decolonization, the events of 1989 and their aftermath, and the post-9/11 period. We will move on to discuss economic matters such as postwar reconstruction, the rise of the EEC and the Eurozone, and the
recent financial crisis. Cultural issues will include the influence of Hollywood on European film (and vice versa), popular music, television, consumerism, and related phenomena.
The purpose of the class is to deepen and broaden your knowledge of how, why, and by what means Americans and Europeans have come to understand--and misunderstand--both each other and the world they share. You will be encouraged to explore the expression of interest in and debate on such themes in
literature and the media.
More information will be given in the course on the requirements for credits in this course.

Mehrfachanmeldung für Parallelkurse führt zum Verlust des Platzanspruchs! Dies gilt nicht für die Warteliste.
Students studying the “old” Lehramt (vertieft) must have passed their Zwischenprüfung before taking this course! Students studying the “old” Lehramt (Unterrichtsfach) must have completed their Grundkurse and have passed both the E-D Übersetzung I and Phonetics and Phonology courses.
- Inhalt:
- For students of the “old” Lehramt, as preparation for the demands of the LPO I, the Oberkurs is still offered as a four-hour course which, along with the course Englisch-Deutsch Übersetzung/Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main language elements of the final exam (for Lehramt).
There will be three exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt. Students will also be required to write comprehension/vocabulary quizzes in class. Lehramt students’ grades from this course will be recorded in FlexNow and, along with the grade for the translation course (also on FlexNow), will later be checked by the Prüfungsamt during registration for the final exam. A Schein is no longer required!
The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to take this course after a longer period spent abroad.
For organisational reasons, “old” Lehramt students are allowed to take this course either before or after taking the translation course Englisch-Deutsch Übersetzung/Sprachmittlung II! These two courses cannot be taken in the same semester!

- The course objectives are to enhance students ability to structure and deliver oral presentations in English. We will focus on the differences between oral and written communication, simple rhetorical techniques and the functional language required to present and communicate successfully.
The students will learn to:
· present an argument in their individual field of study convincingly and persuasively
· interact with the audience by expressing opinions; agreeing and disagreeing with statements; politely interrupting; clarifying statements; and asking and answering questions
· use simple rhetorical techniques in presentations
The course includes opportunities to practise elements of a presentation before leading to a 20-minute presentation at the end of the course. Group feedback will enable students to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses, develop strategies to overcome their weaknesses and hone their presentation skills. Regular participation and preparation is expected for the successful completion of the course.

Eine Anmeldung ist erforderlich.
An- und Abmeldefrist über das Online-Meldesystem FlexNow:
• zur Lehrveranstaltung 26. März 2012 - 27. April 2012 (von 10:00 - 23:59 Uhr)
• zur Prüfung 23. April 2012 – 8.
This course may also be attended by students in the European Joint Master s Degree English and American Studies.
- Inhalt:
- The course will ideally look at "work in progress" being carried out by advanced students as part of their doctoral programmes. It is not primarily designed for students of English, but for those who have to work in and with English within their academic careers for such tasks as sending abstracts or presenting papers in English at conferences.
If capacity allows, students writing other forms of academic work (essays, term papers, etc.) in English will be allowed to come to the class.
It should be understood that this course is not designed as a forum to have papers or other pieces of writing corrected by the native-speaker instructor "for free"!
For prospective participants who do not have student access to FlexNow, an email announcing interest in participating in the course should be sent to the instructor (catherine.irvineATuni-bamberg.de) by 13.04.2012.
All prospective participants will be informed by email about whether there is capacity for them to attend before the semester begins.
