Inhalt:
This course focuses on both current and historical aspects of topics in American life. While Landeskunde US I is a lecture course, this course is intended to be more interactive: students will present a topic focusing on a research question to the class. This presentation should not only be seen as an opportunity to speak about the material, but a chance for students to practice (and receive feedback regarding) their spoken language skills before proceeding to their examinations. Like Landeskunde US I, this course should be seen as preparation for the Landeskunde/Sprechfertigkeit portion of the centralized exams for future teachers.

Requirements for credits for this class will be discussed at the start of the semester.

Please attend the first lecture of the semester so that important information about the exam requirements can be given!

To reflect the demands of LPO I, the Oberkurs is offered as a course which, along with the course Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main
language elements of the final exam (Staatsexamen). In this final exam, the time is shared between Textproduktion, which is the main focus
of the Oberkurs, and translation/Sprachmittlung.
There will be two exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt.
The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in
Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is
primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to
take this course after a longer period spent abroad.

For organisational reasons, we strongly recommend that you take this course before taking the translation course Sprachmittlung
II
! These two courses should not be taken in the same semester! In addition, students should plan their studies so that they are not
taking the Oberkurs in the same semester as the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten either as these courses share exam times

The HaF Placement Test is not a substitute or equivalent of the Anglistik Einstufungstest. For details concerning the Anglistik Einstufungstest, please check the Anglistik website under “News”.

Description
To attend HaF English classes, students must take an obligatory placement test at the beginning of the semester. This helps us to place students in the correct course level. The placement test evaluates grammar, reading, listening and vocabulary, and must be completed before FlexNow course registration closes. Students who do not take the test may not be able to attend English courses this semester.

Test Results
No certificate will be issued for the completion of the HaF placement test, nor can the test be “passed” or “failed”; it is purely for diagnostic purposes. You will receive an email with your test results with a score out of 92 and the CEFR level (B1, B2 etc.) you should select for your course(s) . After successfully completing a course in general English, you do not have to take the placement test again.

If you have taken the Anglistik Einstufungstest, you do not have to take this placement test.

The HaF Placement Test will take place ONLINE.
You will receive an email with more information about access to the test when FlexNow registration for the test has closed.

Results of the test are valid for four semesters.

HaF English Placement Test Overview

Thank you for your interest in taking HaF English courses!

To ensure you start your English learning journey on the right foot,
all students planning on attending HaF English courses for the first
time are required to take the HaF English Placement Test at the
beginning of the semester. This test helps us determine the most
suitable course level for you based on your current proficiency in
grammar, reading, listening, and vocabulary.

Taking the Test

The placement test is mandatory and should be completed before the FlexNow course registration deadline.
Failure to take the test may result in the inability to enroll in English courses for the semester.
Please note: the HaF Placement test is not a substitute for nor an equivalent of the Anglistik/Amerikanistik-Einstufungstest.
(This test is MANDATORY for all new students in the fields of English/American Studies or
Bachelor core/optional subject, Master, all teaching degrees,
Vocational Education/Social Pedagogy.)
If you are an Erasmus student
and planning on attending courses at the Institute for English and
American Studies (in literature, linguistics, cultural studies or
TEFL), you should take the Anglistik/Amerikanistik-Einstufungstest!

Test Logistics

The HaF Placement Test is conducted online on the Virtual Campus, and you'll receive an email with instructions on how to access the test after FlexNow registration for your test session has closed.
The test consists of 92 questions covering grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension.
You'll have 60 minutes to complete the test, but you can submit it earlier if you finish before the time limit.

Understanding Your Results

Upon completion, you will receive an email detailing your test results.
Please note that the HaF placement test is diagnostic and does not result in a pass or fail.

Instead, you'll receive a score out of 92 and a CEFR level recommendation (e.g., B1, B2) for selecting your course(s).
Once you successfully complete a general English course, you won't need to retake the placement test.

You should not choose courses ABOVE the recommended level.

The following table correlates the number of correct points on the HaF placement test with the recommended CEFR level for your HaF English courses:

Number of correct points Recommended CEFR level

0-46 A1/A2

47-63 B1

64-81 B2

82-92 C1

Validity Period

Your test results remain valid for four semesters, providing flexibility in course selection based on your progress and goals.

Inhalt:
Important information regarding the "timing" for attending this course: as a result of changes suggested by the Ministry and
the Prüfungsamt in the procedures for registering for the final exam, students are advised to take this class two semesters
before writing the final exams (i.e. if you are taking the Staatsexamen in spring, you should attend this class in the
previous summer term; if you are taking the Staatsexamen in autumn/fall, you should attend the class in the previous winter
term). This will allow you enough time to have the grade for this course registered in FlexNow well before the deadline for
submitting your final transcript to the Prüfungsamt arrives.

If this new information comes too late for you and you are very close to taking your exams (in Autumn 2019, for example),
please let the instructor know in the first lesson so that your grade for this class can be processed quickly!

The two courses will mainly deal with revising and refreshing the skills required in the written Textproduktion examination.
Exam candidates will also be able to do more detailed preparation for the Landeskunde oral exam in this course and need not
attend "regular" Landeskunde classes/lectures again.

Occasionally and possibly due to the fact that students are not aware of the above changes in registration procedures and
deadlines for the final exam, we have requests to take the Oberkurs and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten at
the same time. This is unfortunately not possible as the exams for both courses are usually identical and are partially
written at the same time! Students obviously cannot have the same "Prüfungsleistung" acknowledged for two separate courses.
The other aspect is a very practical one: students will be covering exam task types in the Oberkurs that are potentially
"repeated" in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten or, in the worst case scenario, students may face an exam task
in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten exams that has not been covered in the Oberkurs at all, but only
addressed in the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten. Even if it means taking the Sprachpraktische Übung für
Examenskandidaten in the final semester before taking the final exams, students affected by this problem should plan
accordingly and continue taking the Oberkurs first and the Sprachpraktische Übung für Examenskandidaten in the subsequent
semester.

This course is designed for students of all faculties who have to write academic texts in English.

This course will guide students through the process of writing a research article in English such as a Bachelors or Masters thesis. Starting from a research question, the students will design a study to answer this question and then plan and draft the article itself. Students will be given guidance on how to construct a research article in their field by analysing published articles and using this as a guide to make their writing appropriate for their field. This course will not only look at the mechanics of writing, but also aim to help students become better academic thinkers and planners. Through guided practice, students will learn to give peer feedback on their colleagues’ writing, helping them in turn to become better editors of their own research articles.
