- Are you a Lehramt student for Grund- or Hauptschule who needs to have certified English skills at the B2 level?
In the new LPOI, §36 and 38 specify the need for Lehramt students studying to become Grund- or HauptschullehrerInnen to have certified English skills at the B2 (CEFR) level. This 4-hour course will give you the opportunity to develop these skills and gain certification.
The course is an integrated language course involving grammar revision and consolidation and vocabulary expansion, as well as practice in reading, writing, listening and oral skills.
Students will be admitted upon completion of an online placement test before the beginning of the semester which ensures a minimum of B1 (the level attained upon the successful completion of the 10th class in English in the German secondary school system).
The test can be taken at:
http://sprachtest.cornelsen.de/einstufung/index.aspx , and the results should be submitted to catherine.irvine(at)uni-bamberg.de before the first class meeting.
At the end of the semester, there will be an exam similar in structure to the Cambridge First Certificate but shorter; students who pass will receive a certificate as proof of having attained B2.

- The course is an integrated language course involving grammar revision and consolidation and vocabulary expansion at the C1 level, as well as practice in reading, writing, listening and oral skills.
By the end of this two-semester course, you should be able to:
• understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning
• express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions
• use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
• produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
At the end of the semester, there will be an exam similar in structure to the Cambridge Advanced Certificate. In order to receive a certificate indicating that the level of English attained is that of C1, both Preparing for C1 (Teil 1) and Preparing for C1 (Teil 2) will have to be completed successfully.

Please note that all courses in Sprachpraxis are designed for students who have taken their Abitur in English; we are not able to offer beginners' courses! Students from other disciplines who wish to improve their English should check the webpages of the Sprachenzentrum. In addition, students who arrive late for the first class session, have not taken the Placement Test (Einstufungstest (see details on the Anglistik homepage) and/or have not registered for the class via FlexNow are not guaranteed a place in that course for this semester!
- Inhalt:
- Activities in Grundkurs I focus on the three fundamental skills in the English language (reading, listening and writing). The aim is to make participants more proficient in understanding spoken and written English and to write with confidence. In this respect, Grundkurs I should be seen as an introduction to the skills necessary for the study of English and as a clear indicator for the participants' further progress in their university studies.
There will be two central examinations for all Grundkurs I classes, which will take place outside of regular class time and which can only be taken on the dates given on the notice boards in U9 and in Luitpoldstrasse 5. Students participating in class are required to register for these exams via FlexNow!
The course can only be attended in one semester, although the examinations are open to those students who were not successful in passing the course at the first attempt. In this semester, we are offering two “Grundkurs I for Repeater” classes; we advise those who have to repeat to attend these classes, but, if this is not possible, please note the following information:
The content of all of the parallel Grundkurs I classes is identical.

- This course is concerned with the development of basic writing skills in English, including organizing ideas, paragraph structure, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and editing and revising written work. Assignments practice and assess these various skills and also focus on the types of tasks found in the Textproduktion examination in Staatsexamen.
There will be three central examinations for all Grundkurs III classes, which will take place outside of regular class time. The examinations must be taken on the dates given on the notice boards in U9 and in Luitpoldstrasse 5. Students must register for these exams via FlexNow!
The content and goals of all Grundkurs III classes are identical.
N.B. Only one Grundkurs may be taken per semester. The completion of Grundkurs I and II is thus required for entry into Grundkurs III.

- Inhalt:
- This lecture course will deal with central topics concerning British life and institutions and will discuss some (if not all!) of the topics which are used as the basis for examinations. It should not only be seen as "the way to prepare for the oral exam", but also as an opportunity to learn about topics of interest related to Great Britain while also hearing spoken English.
It is recommended, especially for Lehramt students, to attend both the US and GB Landeskunde courses during their studies; students can specialize in either GB or US, but are strongly advised to have knowledge of both countries.

- This course will look in greater detail at some of the subjects already dealt with in Landeskunde GB I. Students will be able to use the opportunity to discuss Landeskunde in more depth and in a smaller group than GB I. Student participation - in the form of short oral presentations - is a required element of this course so that the prospective examination candidate is not actively talking about Landeskunde for the first time in the examination itself!
Requirements for credits for this class will be discussed at the start of the semester. Please make sure you are there in the first class!

Students studying the “old” Lehramt (vertieft) must have passed their Zwischenprüfung before taking this course! Students studying the “old” Lehramt (Unterrichtsfach) must have completed their Grundkurse and have passed both the E-D Übersetzung I and Phonetics and Phonology courses.
- Inhalt:
- For students of the “old” Lehramt, as preparation for the demands of the LPO I, the Oberkurs is still offered as a four-hour course which, along with the course Englisch-Deutsch Übersetzung/Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main language elements of the final exam (for Lehramt).
There will be three exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt. Students will also be required to write comprehension/vocabulary quizzes in class. Lehramt students’ grades from this course will be recorded in FlexNow and, along with the grade for the translation course (also on FlexNow), will later be checked by the Prüfungsamt during registration for the final exam. A Schein is no longer required!
The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in Landeskunde. It is therefore indispensable that students have already taken classes in GB and US Landeskunde and are aware that this course is primarily intended as realistic preparation for Lehramt students for the Textproduktion paper in their final exams. It is thus advisable to take this course after a longer period spent abroad.
For organisational reasons, “old” Lehramt students are allowed to take this course either before or after taking the translation course Englisch-Deutsch Übersetzung/Sprachmittlung II! These two courses cannot be taken in the same semester!

- To reflect the demands of the “new” LPO I, the Oberkurs is now offered as a two-hour course which, along with the course Sprachmittlung II, deals with the main language elements of the final exam (Staatsexamen). In this final exam, the time is shared between Textproduktion, which is the main focus of the Oberkurs, and translation/Sprachmittlung. This represents a 50% reduction in the time and scope of the Textproduktion and, for this reason, this course is now 2 SWS in length and worth 3 ECTS.
There will be two exams written outside of class that are based on tasks/skills required by the Textproduktion examination for Lehramt. The course will require students to demonstrate considerable linguistic complexity on all levels and have a high degree of competence in Landeskunde.
