Inhalt:

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together.

Ties between Germany and the USA date back to the very beginning of European settlement in North America. In this class we will examine those transatlantic ties on the basis of cultural, political, economical and social interaction between the two nations – in history and present times. We will investigate attitudes and stereotypes, but also interrogate how singular events and various alliances had and have a lasting effect on both nations. What does it mean to be an American, a German, or possibly an amalgamation of both in a globalized world? How are attitudes shaped through history and used to promote national agendas?

The class is a joint venture with the American Studies Department at the Charles University, Prague (CZ). It will consist of a lecture section in Bamberg (six sessions: October 14, 21, 28, November 11, 18, 25) and a field trip to Prague in January 2014, where we will participate in and contribute to the “Student Symposium in Transatlantic Studies” (January 15–18, 2014). Participation in the excursion is obligatory. The price for the field trip will be ca. 200 Euro (travel expenses, accommodation and breakfast) and may be partly funded by the department.

Our reading will consist of basic texts of the relatively new and strongly interdisciplinary field of Transatlantic Studies and a number of texts about the affect of American popular culture on Germany and vice versa. Furthermore, we will consult literary texts from Germany and the USA, as well as powerful images and influential pieces of music. The material will be made available to students via the VC before the start of the semester. Every participant of the class is expected to contribute to the symposium in one way or another. The final grade will be based on ONE of the following options:

1. presenting a short paper at the symposium (hand in your script afterwards)
2. acting as a chair person/discussant and writing a short review of the conference
3. writing a traditional term paper.

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in American Literature or Culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place on October 23 (second week of the semester).

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

WICHTIG: Es stehen fünf Parallelkurse zur Verfügung. Die Termine A, B und D finden Sie in Flexnow bei der Englischen Literaturwissenschaft, die Termine C und E bei der Amerikanistik. Bitte entscheiden Sie sich frühzeitig für EINEN Termin! Studierende, die sich gleichzeitig für mehrere Kurse "Introduction to English and American Literature" anmelden, werden nach Maßgabe der Kurskapazitäten einem Kurs zugeteilt.

The following courses are supplementary to the seminar:

• Tutorium to the "Introduction to English and American Literature" (no additional enrollment required!)
• a one-off 2-hour course provided by the library: "Einführung in die Bibliotheksbenutzung für Anglisten" (enrollment via the Virtual Campus, access via "Bibliothek")

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.
Please note that the first tutorial will take place AFTER the first regular session!

Media Session Amerikanistik "The Empire Strikes Back"

The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Department that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

The up-to-date program can be viewed in the VC course "Schwarzes Brett Amerikanistik". This semester we will focus on movies that represent marginalized voices. Thus the title of this term's Media Session: The Empire Strikes Back.
