Scheinanforderungen:
2 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (30 min)
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation (45 min)
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + written paper
3/4/6 ECTS (BA Ergänzungsmodul in combination with the course Methods and Theories in Linguistics , 1 ECTS): regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam (20 min)

8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit dem Dozenten vor Semesterbeginn möglich.

Modulanbindungen:
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS im Rahmen eines Seminars oder einer frei wählbaren Übung in der englischen Sprachwissenschaft erforderlich sind.

Inhalt:

In the OED, slang is defined as "the special vocabulary used by any set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type". The idea of slang as an inferior variety is reflected not just in current debates about youth culture and the speech patterns of ethnic minorities in the US and the UK. The ways in which certain groups define themselves linguistically has been a constant topic of discussion and a field of interest for many linguists. In this seminar, we will investigate some of the mechanisms behind varieties of English which inform interlocutors about the group identity of their speakers. The idea is to gain a deeper understanding of not just specific features of certain varieties but also the motivation behind the rich repertoire of slang expressions. Among the topics dealt with in the seminar are African-American Vernacular English, the emerging variety of Multicultural London English and media representations in music (particularly hip-hop and grime) and film.
