Students attending this seminar can choose whether they want to earn credits in English language education (Fachdidaktik Englisch) or for the KulturPLUS module.

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will focus on two central components of English language teaching (ELT): texts and grammar. According to the broad concept of texts in current curricula, texts include a great variety of formats such as YouTube clips, songs, and digital-born texts, all of which offer specific learning potential for different competences. The development of grammatical competence plays a central role in ELT and this can take a great variety of forms and key foci that go beyond traditional gap-filling exercises. The increasing use of digital media such as tablets in English lessons has put forth new challenges for teaching as well as potential for more engaging and effective approaches. We will discuss possible prospects and drawbacks of digital media and explore ways of working with a variety of texts while also fostering grammatical competence.
The seminar will take place in the digital language laboratory (SprachenLLab), so there will be plenty of opportunities for students to experiment with and develop (digital) materials focusing on texts and grammar.

Inhalt:

The aim of this course is to introduce basic concepts and principles of English language teaching and to discuss them in the light of practical application and classroom procedure. The course includes a discussion of the following: theories of language learning and acquisition, approaches and methods in ELT, teaching vocabulary / grammar / the skills / literature, the principles of lesson planning, error analysis, and assessment procedures in the classroom.

Important:
1. You should not register for more than one parallel course. This can lead to you being excluded. This does not apply to the waiting list.
2. Not attending the first session of the course can lead to you being excluded.
3. Erasmus/foreign students cannot be guaranteed a place in this seminar. These students must arrange a personal appointment with the lecturer during the last week of the semester break.
4. Preference will be given to students in higher semesters, and it is strongly recommended that students in their first semester do not attend this course.
