Inhalt:

"[A]s unknown […] as the darkest reaches of Africa." This description of the backstreets of London, which we encounter in Arthur Machen’s 1895 horror novel The Three Imposters, brings to a head the fear and the fascination of ‘others’ and ‘otherness’ in late nineteenth-century British culture. Irrational forces and grotesque forms seemed to lurk just behind the veneers of Victorian drawing rooms; in those regions just beyond the white patriarchy’s reach; both outside and – alarmingly – inside the borders of Empire. The central focus of this module will be the fin-de-siècle and modernist Gothic tradition in British, Irish, and American literature in the decades around 1900. In particular, we shall consider how literary texts reflected changing conceptions of, and fears about, human and social identity in relation to bodily, natural, racial, and sexual ‘others’. Charles Darwin had brought to the fore the disturbing proximity of man and animal in the evolutionary chain, especially in The Descent of Man (1871). Advances in parasitology added new inflections to fears about infestation and infection. And the coming advent of psychoanalysis would shed uncanny new light on the darkest recesses of the human soul.

Against that backdrop, our seminars will mainly be devoted to short stories and novellas by a variety of writers. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's creepy short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' (1892) might be set alongside Henry James’ spine-tingling The Turn of the Screw (1898). H.G. Wells’ science fiction romance The Time Machine (1895) will be read in the context of broader, late-Victorian fears of 'Degeneration'. With samples from influential twentieth-century adaptations (e.g. Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, 1979), the course will culminate in sessions devoted to either all or a selection of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899). By the end of the course, students will be able to use literary texts to uncover the fears, the ambitions, and the identity crises of an important moment in British culture; and to ask what parallels they might find in contemporary culture.

Important: please try to acquire as many of these as possible, in the stated editions (we shall also read James' The Turn of the Screw if there is enough time and interest). These editions are inexpensive, and the texts themselves are well worth owning. You should ensure that you read as much as possible before the start of the semester. The more you read, the more you'll get out of our discussions!

Inhalt:

Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.

The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills
Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art zur Abfassung einer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.

To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed, necessary for the composition of each student's own academic essay. Students ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

Inhalt:

Am 7. August 2017 im U2/01.30 (09:15-10:45 Uhr) findet eine Wiederholungsklausur für diejenigen Studierenden des Einführungskurses (Dr Craig, Prof. Dr. Jansohn) statt, die den Kurs trotz Mitschreibens der Abschlussklausur nicht bestanden haben oder aufgrund eines ärztlichen Attestes an der Abschlussklausur nicht teilnehmen konnten. Das Attest muss der/m Lehrenden innerhalb von drei Tagen (hier gelten die Bestimmungen unter: https://www.uni-bamberg.de/anglistik/studium/informationen-zur-attestpflicht/ ) im Original vorgelegt werden. Die Wiederholungsklausur wird von den jeweiligen Lehrenden gestellt und muss persönlich abgeholt werden. Eine Auskunft über die Endnote kann nicht per E-Mail oder telefonisch erfolgen. Studierende müssen sich für die Wiederholungsklausur über FlexNow anmelden.
