Inhalt:
In this course students will have the opportunity to practice the key skills of language analysis that they have learnt in the lecture An Introduction to Linguistics. Students will work intensively on example sets taken from a broad range of different languages, discuss different analyses, and evaluate different theoretical proposals. The course closes with a written exam.

Informationen für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft:
Die Veranstaltung entspricht für Studierende der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft der obligatorischen Vorlesung (2 ECTS) für das Basismodul Romanische Sprachwissenschaft.
In diesem Fall muss die FlexNow-Lehrveranstaltungsanmeldung wie auch die Prüfungsanmeldung über den FlexNow!-Zugang der Romanischen Sprachwissenschaft erfolgen.
Inhalt:
This course introduces the student to the skills and techniques necessary for the scientific analysis of language, and to some of the different theoretical approaches to linguistics currently available. The focus will be on the traditional areas of language structure: sound patterns (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology) and their meaning (semantics), and the structure of phrases and sentences (syntax). The lecture will also give students a short overview of the world's languages, and an introduction to the resources available for studying them. Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills in the companion seminar An Introduction to Linguistics, which is offered in parallel to this lecture.

Inhalt:
This course provides a hands-on introduction to quantitative methods in linguistics, illustrated with practical analysis of the spoken language data based developed at the department (the Multi-CAST, WOWA, and HamBam corpora).

The course will be divided into two parts: The first, held in person by Geoffrey Haig, will discuss the foundations of quantitative research, with a focus on language corpora. The second part, held via MS Teams by Nils Schiborr, will provide hands-on instruction on analytical methods using the statistical computing language R, regular expressions, and other tools.

For both parts of the course, use of a laptop or desktop computer is recommended, as we will be working intensively with numerous pieces of software.
