- Inhalt
- How were convents for Sufis organized in the Medieval and Early Modern Middle East? What models were developed for the construction of khanaqahs and zawiyas, and how did these buildings serve the requirements of a community of mystics, with their shaykhs and followers? This class is focused on the city of Aleppo with its unique historical urban fabric (despite the destructions of the recent war). Important examples of Sufi structures will be studied along with relevant texts. Particular attention will be given to Arabic inscriptions as authentic documents of the foundation of these institutions. A couple of hitherto unpublished funeral inscriptions from one particular zawiya will be read in class.
