- Inhalt
- Scholars have long argued about the democratic consequences of crises. The 2008 financial crisis, for instance, did not only have economic consequences, but it has also altered party competition across Europe to a significant degree. In its aftermath new parties challenging the political mainstream have increasingly gained vote shares – many of which are populist radical right parties who pose a challenge to democracies across Europe. On the other hand, it has also been suggested that crises might have positive effects on democratic participation and accountability.
In this course we will focus on how (severe) crises affect democratic processes and outcomes, and will discuss scientific results to answer questions such as:
• Under what circumstances can populist parties benefit from crises?
• What explains variation in the degree of accountability of political actors?
• How do crises influence democratic participation?
• How can we explain variations in policy responses to crises?
During this course students will gain an understanding of how we can understand the effects of crises on democratic politics from a comparative political science perspective.
