Inhalt
Tailored for undergraduate and graduate students seeking a historical understanding of comics, this wide-ranging lecture unravels the development, milestones, and prominent creators of the American comics landscape. Guided by sources and methods from comic studies, cultural history, art history, and narrative theory, the lecture scrutinizes comics as an artistic depository of historical knowledge and socio-political critique.

We begin with an in-depth analysis of the rise of illustrated narratives in the late 19th century, resulting in the emergence of iconic newspaper comic strips such as Richard F. Outcault's "The Yellow Kid" and Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland." Subsequent sessions focus on the Golden Age of Comics, marked by the creation of superheroes like Superman and Batman, whom we contextualize within the broader historical milieu of World War II as American archetypes embodying the nation’s aspirational ideals. Moving on to the Silver Age, the lecture addresses the reinvigoration of the superhero genre and its relationship with Cold War narratives through the works of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, among others, while also analyzing the impact of the Comics Code Authority (1954) on the content and artistry of the medium. A thorough examination of the Bronze Age illuminates comics’s turn to darker territory and controversial social issues such as race, poverty, and addiction. Here we take some time to investigate the inception of underground comics as a counter-cultural response to the conservatism and consumerism of the Reagan era. In the modern age, the course discusses in detail the contributions of graphic novelists like Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Maus," a story about surviving the Holocaust and its legacy in the present, and appraises the innovations and political punch of creators such as Alison Bechdel in "Fun Home" and Ta-Nehisi Coates' reimagining of Black Panther.

Through background analysis and nuanced close reading, the lecture uncovers the evolution of US comics as an arena for exploration of subjects like war, immigration, multiculturalism, diversity, and justice. The aim is to provide a colorful, enjoyable experience of American comics that is of course fun and informative, but also revealing of how comics have always mirrored and questioned cultural and political shifts in US history.
