- Were norms of Islamic Law really always applied in courts? This question has often been asked regarding the practical application of these norms. This topic will be in the focus of our seminar, as we look at the role of judges, muftis, witnesses, etc. in specific legal cases. Starting with an introduction to some basic principles of Islamic Law, the focus is on legal practice and the dynamics of adjusting legal norms to a changing world. We will analyze together different types of texts (legal works, fatwas, court documents).
Short Arabic source texts will also be read in the seminar, but participation is also possible without knowledge of Arabic after consultation with the lecturer.
