Inhalt
Ecofeminism, postcolonial ecocriticism, material ecocriticism, affective ecocriticism, animal studies, environmental communication – all these terms, theories, and approaches have developed over the last 30 years of ecocritical scholarship with the common goal of grasping the relationship between the natural environment, humanity, and literature. Ecocriticism as an umbrella term has since been established as one of the most important and most relevant literary theories of the 21st century. From different perspectives, ecocriticism analyses the relationship between human and non-human world in both fictional and non-fictional texts; texts that range from 18th-century natural history essays that focus on describing natural detail to 21st-century climate change fiction.

This course offers an overview of the history and different branches of ecocriticism in close connection with US environmental history, focusing on various literary texts from the 19th century until today (e.g. Henry Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Linda Howe, Mary Oliver, Jack Collom, Margret Atwood …). Primary texts will be discussed and selected together with the participants in the first session.
