- "I'm Chile-...Dominica-Rican! / But I always say I'm from Queens!" —this line from the Broadway and movie musical In the Heights sums up this seminar’s trajectory across a wide array of Latinx literature and culture. "Latinx" refers to the multidisciplinary academic field of Latinx Studies that seeks to highlight Latin American and Caribbean voices in the US. Works by Latinx novelists, poets, and filmmakers are not only a testimony to the diverse literary and cultural landscape of the US, but they also create impactful discursive spaces for intercultural dialog and connection. Over the course of the semester, participants are invited to discuss Latinx texts that span across a variety of topics and genres. This course provides an overview of Latinx poetry, short fiction, novels, plays, musicals, and movies, such as feminist writer Gloria Anzaldúa’s highly influential Borderlands/La Frontera (1987), Junot Díaz’s 2007 novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and In the Heights (2005; 2021), penned by Hamilton-creator Lin Manuel Miranda. We will discuss excerpts from these and other texts, addressing how central concepts of Latinx Studies shape and transform literary and cultural representations of race, class, gender, Indigeneity, spirituality, sexual orientation, genre, and American national identity on a wider scale.
