- Middle Eastern societies are throughout history often characterized by a multi-ethnic and multi-religious composition. Islamic Law, administrative practice and social dynamics have created particular norms and standards of cohabitation and coexistence that organized every-day life in a more or less conflictual way for each period. We will look at the early modern period in the Ottoman Empire and contrast classical concepts with the changing social role of non-Muslim populations.
