- Übung "Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Anglisten" (one-off event, enrollment via the Virtual Campus, Bereich "Bibliothek")

- This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together.
Ties between Germany and the USA date back to the very beginning of European settlement in North America. In this class we will examine those transatlantic ties on the basis of cultural, political, economical and social interaction between the two nations – in history and present times. We will investigate attitudes and stereotypes, but also interrogate how singular events and various alliances had and have a lasting effect on both nations. What does it mean to be an American, a German, or possibly an amalgamation of both in a globalized world? How are attitudes shaped through history and used to promote national agendas?
The class is a joint venture with the American Studies Department at the Charles University, Prague (CZ). It will consist of a lecture section in Bamberg (six sessions: October 14, 21, 28, November 11, 18, 25) and a field trip to Prague in January 2014, where we will participate in and contribute to the “Student Symposium in Transatlantic Studies” (January 15–18, 2014). Participation in the excursion is obligatory. The price for the field trip will be ca. 200 Euro (travel expenses, accommodation and breakfast) and may be partly funded by the department.
Our reading will consist of basic texts of the relatively new and strongly interdisciplinary field of Transatlantic Studies and a number of texts about the affect of American popular culture on Germany and vice versa. Furthermore, we will consult literary texts from Germany and the USA, as well as powerful images and influential pieces of music. The material will be made available to students via the VC before the start of the semester. Every participant of the class is expected to contribute to the symposium in one way or another. The final grade will be based on ONE of the following options:
1. presenting a short paper at the symposium (hand in your script afterwards)
2. acting as a chair person/discussant and writing a short review of the conference
3. writing a traditional term paper.
