2. Voraussetzungen für Schein- bzw. Punktevergabe:
regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme; Präsentation; Hausarbeit in englischer Sprache nach Maßgabe des Style Sheet (3.000-4.000 Wörter; Übung "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" und Übung "Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Anglisten"
Für die Übung "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten" tragen Sie sich bitte für einen der zur Verfügung stehenden Einzeltermine ein, indem Sie im VC-Kurs "Übung 'Einführung ins wissenschaftliche Arbeiten' - ANMELDUNG" (Bereich Englische Literaturwissenschaft) an der Abstimmung teilnehmen.
Für die Übung "Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Anglisten tragen Sie sich über den Virtuellen Campus (Bereich Bibliothek) ein. Siehe hierzu die Website der TB 4 und der EngLit ("News")

WICHTIG! Dieser Kurs kann auch von Studierenden der Islamwissenschaft besucht werden. Die Anmeldung in FlexNow erfolgt für alle Studierende im Bereich "Professur für Amerikanistik".
Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze freigehalten. Bei Überbuchung des Seminars fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit der Dozentin/dem Dozenten.
- Inhalt
- Since 9/11 Islamophobia has grown dramatically among the majority of US-Americans and Europeans. If you were to ask the people around you, it s not unlikely that one of the following images will come to their mind: a) men fanatically chanting Allahu Akbar ; c) boys wearing suicide bombing belts; or c) completely veiled, silenced and deindividualized women.
The purpose of this course is to discuss key examples of American literature and film that offer more nuanced views of Muslims regarding both their history and current situation in the USA, and analyze their complex cultural significance. To that end, we will first study Malcolm X s remarkable autobiography The Autobiography of Malcolm X as Told to Alex Haley (1964), Mohja Kahf s coming-of-age novel The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (2006) and Mohsin Hamid s splendid narrative The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007). Thereafter, we will scrutinze The 99, the world s first comic to feature superheroes with an Islamic background. Finally, we will dissect two Hollywood films: Brian Gilbert s Not Without My Daughter (1991) and Stephen Gaghan s Syriana (2005).
Students are expected to actively contribute to the course, i.e. to participate in discussions, hold a presentation and write a final paper.
Please note:
Participants are required to have read the texts by the beginning of the seminar.
Since it s not possible to show the films during class time, we offer two screening dates where you can watch them in advance:
Tuesday, June 6, 8 p.m., U5/024: Not Without My Daughter
Tuesday, June 12, 8.p.m., U5/024: Syriana.
