- Assassination is the extreme form of censorship. (George Bernard Shaw, The Shewing-up of Blanco Posnet) Although fortunately not all forms of censorship end in murder, Shaw s words have not lost their validity: only last month, Salman Rushdie, against whom Ayatollah Khomeini has issued a fatwa for his supposedly blasphemous novel The Satanic Verses (1988), cancelled his speech at India s biggest literary festival in Jaipur, fearing assassination after influential Muslim clerics protested against his participation. Censorship has always been a powerful means to regulate what is articulated and circulated in a given society, what is deemed unacceptable by those invested with social power. Then as now, it has reflected cultural change and defined what is to be considered art .
In this class, we are going to retrace British censorship history before we move on to Michel Foucault s theory of discursive control and Pierre Bourdieu s concept of the field of cultural production. The renewed academic interest in censorship since the 1990s will then help us distinguish a variety of censorship definitions, dimensions and uses of censorship.
With these theoretical foundations in mind, we will examine works of 20th-century British literature that have caused scandal or have been banned on either social, religious, political or sexual grounds. We will have a closer look at Lady Chatterley s love affair (Lady Chatterley s Lover, 1928), find out why Aldous Huxley s Brave New World (1931) has become the third most censored book in America and examine the impact of the 1843 Theatres Act on Edward Bond s scandal-rousing play Saved (1965). Why did Khomeini offer a million-dollar reward for Salman Rushdie s death (The Satanic Verses, 1988)? What could be deemed scandalous about a children s picture book like Abigail at the Beach (1988)? Is J. K. Rowling to be blamed for promoting paganism? These and more questions will be discussed in class. In an additional film session, we will talk about TV censorship as it recently became visible in the banning of the BBC cartoon series Popetown (2003).
