3. Requirements for successful completion of the course:
2 ECTS in all modules for degree-seeking students of the University of Bamberg except those special cases mentioned below: none, BUT REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED!
Special cases:
2 ECTS (BA Studium Generale, Erasmus and other visiting students; ungraded or pass/fail): regular attendance
2 ECTS (MA English and American Studies: Consolidation Module Linguistics I): oral examination together with the seminar in the module (30 minutes in all)
3 ECTS (MEd Berufliche Bildung: Kulturelle Bildung. Grundlagenmodul B): written test of 60 minutes
4 ECTS (Lehramt RS/Gym: Kulturelle Bildung. Grundlagenmodul A): written test of 90 minutes
4 ECTS (BA Studium Generale; pass/fail): written test of 90 minutes

- Inhalt
- This lecture provides a broad overview of the phenomenon of variation, which is a central property of English (and actually all natural languages). In the course of the lecture, we will consider several types of variation at various levels of analysis (orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, etc.) and will look at different dimensions of variation, such as mode/medium (e.g. written vs. spoken language), region (e.g. traditional regional dialects and postcolonial varieties) as well as social (e.g. gender, age, education, profession) and stylistic factors. In addition, attitudes toward variation and related issues such as standardization will be discussed.
