Inhalt
Dr. Mari Jones (Cambridge) is one of the world's leading experts in the fields of language contact, language change and language obsolescence. She has published widely in these areas, in particular with regard to Norman French and English-Norman language contact. In her Bamberg lecture series, she will cover the following topics:

1. Borrowing I (lexical)
2. Borrowing II (syntactic)
3. Internal vs external change: Focus on varieties of English
4. Language death
5. 'Deliberate' change: language planning I (history of French seen through the optic of language planning)
6. 'Deliberate change: language planning II (in language birth [Seychelles creole], and in language revitalisation [Jèrriais])
7. 'Deliberate change: language planning III (Breton)
8. Language and identity in the French speaking world
9. Identity planning in language revitalisation
10. How we can look for variation using written texts

Minor changes of the programme are possible.

This lecture course, which combines synchronic and historical perspectives, explores the related processes of language variation and language change in the context of French. Traditional approaches (such as the dichotomy between 'internal' and 'external' change) are combined with more recent theoretical frameworks (such as codeswitching, language death), and it is demonstrated that the boundaries between what appear to be very different types of change may in fact often be blurred. The course also introduces the additional dimension of 'unconscious' and 'deliberate' language change, distinguishing between change which occurs without speakers generally being aware of the 'linguistic decisions' they make and instances in which conscious attempts are made to influence the form (and often the status) of a linguistic variety via processes such as language planning and revitalisation. Lectures also explore the interface between the French language and questions of identity.
