Connecting theories of identity with the cultural climate of 1990s Britain, this course will take a closer look at two different kinds of “fiction”. Narrowly understood, what we will look at are prose narratives from the last decade of the last millennium. We will place them in their cultural context and examine what has often been seen as the unifying thread of British 1990s literature, i.e. its pre-occupation with questions of insecure personal and national identity.
Broadly understood, however, our understanding of “British fictions” also is to include the construction of identity-related discourses and narratives within British culture as a whole. One such discourse was the construction of a “Britain under threat”, conducted especially in tabloid treatments of topics such as immigration, football, tourism, and European integration. Another reaction was the employment of a clear-cut, if fictious, essentialist conception of “Britishness” within the “movements” of “Britpop” and “BritArt”.
While these two senses of “British fictions” thus refer to seemingly different cultural products, they are nevertheless united in their search for identity. And, maybe surprisingly, what we will come to understand is that in the 1990s the “dislocation” of immigrants in Britain was mirrored by “the British” themselves, who nevertheless managed to transform this sense of confusion into the story of “Cool Britannia”.

Drawing on cultural studies, literary studies, and theories of identity the seminar aims at providing students with a deeper understanding of 1990s Britain. Students are to gain skills in the critical and cultural reading of primary and secondary literature and will be given opportunities for original engagement with the sources under consideration.
