- Inhalt
- This interactive seminar series builds on the content of the lecture series ‘Non-invasive near-surface prospection in archaeology’. It problematizes the interpretation of geophysical datasets and trains the participants in being critical users of such data. The student will be trained in the assessment of the collection, processing, and presentation of geophysical datasets.
Aspects of data interpretation, including cognitive processes, processing steps, and visualization will be presented and discussed. Guest lecturers will be invited to highlight specific themes.
Each participant / small groups of participants will work on the interpretation of an existing dataset from an archaeological context. The progress of these projects will be monitored by short in-class presentations and discussions.
Learning goals
At the end of the course the student will:
- be able to critically asses the presentation and interpretation of geophysical reports and publications;
- be able to recognize different categories of geophysical features in presented data;
- be aware of the challenges of data interpretation and cognitive processes in data analysis;
- be trained in presenting a research project in written and oral form.
Schedule and literature will be provided shortly.
The course will be taught in English and German.
The examination of the course will consist of a) an assessment of seminar participation and in-class presentation of the project (50% of the final mark) and b) a written essay on the final outcomes of the interpretation project (50% of the final mark).
