Studenten, die die Studienleistung im Nebenfach Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft einbringen möchten, müssen sich in FlexNow bei der Lehreinheit "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" zu diesem Seminar anmelden.
- Inhalt
- This course introduces the advanced student of Linguistics to the scientific analysis of how speakers of different natural languages use grammatical constructions in order to convey information in a structured way. Of particular interest in this course will be the interrelations between abstract grammatical (and partly prosodic) structure and actual language usage during communication, and how particular constructions are specialised in serving particular communicative goals. However, we will also discuss the possibilities for speakers to leave particular portions of information and meaning implicit, demand-ing the addressee to reconstruct what is missing, and interpret the message correctly.
Topics covered include the following:
o Prerequisites: language structure, meaning, and communication
o Models of communication and Gricean implicatures
o Information: proposition, presupposition, and assertion
o Discourse structure I: information status of discourse referents
o Reference types: genericity, specificity, and individuation
o Deixis
o Discourse structure II: co-reference and phoric relations
o Information structure I: focus structure and focus types
o Information structure II: topic structures and topic types
o Pragmatics and grammar I: Light subjects and new objects
o Pragmatics and grammar II: marking focus and topic
o Diachronic aspects: from discourse to syntax?
